This linked thread might be dealing with recession and unemployment but it reminds me of when I visited my P and M and once commented on the fact that the cellar in the family home had as many rooms as the ground floor.
They fessed up that at one stage it was full of tins and other stored supplies as when cold war paranoia was at its peak and they thought there was a very real chance of a pre-emptive strike in the 60s they were preparing for the worst.
I'd forgotten how very much on-the-edge the world could be until '89.
To heck with terrorism and recession/ depression, this is a much safer world by half. :TThere is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Why can't I lose my appetite when I have a cold like a normal person? Could do with losing a few lbs but still eating the same amount even with me hacking my lungs out.0

Before you do, have a last look at your appetite- you won't be seeing it again for a while.

I found a box full of handbags this evening, sadly it was under a pile of three boxes full of books. Also, boxes full of blank cds bought because we'll alays need them. Pah. And a favorite pair of shoes which cost a fiver and have had repairs on them (re heels and repair to a split seam) since to a value several times that....and they weren't very squashed at all. Most scarily I don't think the dining room furniture is going to fit into the new dining room.

Yes thanks. He's moved back upstairs to what used to be their bedroom and their double bed before she got ill.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Not being one for eating well, or healthily - and never exercising (even typing that word brought me out in a sweat), I've always been a little over what I should be .... and it kind of crept up over the years. Then about 7 years ago I spent about 6 months losing 3 stone.... then never got on the scales much and returned to old habits. So, today, there was a necessity to get out the scales, which were tested by a super-weight-conscious person who confirmed they were spot on ... and I asked "how much am I then?" and they guessed 10stone7.... so on I leapt (expecting them to probably be right) and it went just to 9stone7... not bad as that means a weight gain of just 18 pounds in the past 7 years while scoffing copious amounts of pies, chocolate and other great rubbish. In fact, only yesterday I scoffed a whole packet of Caramel Nibbles (CoOp £1.09 at the moment) after my pie and chips - and today I've had two cheesecakes (little 'uns).Could do with losing a few lbs0 -

One of my favourite books, and never seen the movie.
It's a great, great book. Really fantastic.
If you enjoy politics then Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail is even better if not quite as mental. Hunter calls Nixon as a complete bunt before Watergate and all that was ever thought of.0 -
LIR, thought you might enjoy this, having lived in Italy:
More than a decade living in this country has led me to a shocking conclusion. Being Italian is bad for your health.
As winter draws in, those around me are suffering from a range of distinctly Italian ailments, that make our limited British colds and flus sound as bland as our food.
Among my Italian friends I am considered something of an immuno-superhuman.
I can leave the gym sweaty to have my shower at home and not catch a chill en route. I can swim after eating and not get congestion or cramp. I can walk around with wet hair and not get "la cervicale".
I even brag about it. At restaurants I will say: "Let me sit in the draught. I'll be fine. I'm English."
It is a question of etiquette too.
We are a nation that "mustn't grumble", trained from an early age that the only answer to "How are you?" is "Fine, thank you."
Our vocabulary reflects this. Whether we have had a cold or spent six weeks in intensive care, we will tell you we have been "a bit poorly".

Feeling colder today...anyone else?
We've almost got the stuf in order for the builders tomorrow. I'm going to take lots of pictures in the morning. I measured the furniture with y arms and a couple of badmington thingies this morning and I think the furniture WILL fit in the new room, but not in a particularly preposessing way. (along the same wall, making a narrow room narrower and a bit unbalanced.) So, in some time will be looking for a long and very narrow dining table!0
