The single best question to ask in an interview? What's 7x8?

    1. You can be sure it's not a prepared answer that you get
    2. It completely throws people
    3. The answer is always interesting and rarely right.

I ask the question. Then when the candidate inevitably stares at me and says, "What?" I repeat the question and smile.

I wait about 20-30 seconds with a blank expression and if there's been no answer I say, "I was just wondering if you knew what the answer to 7 x 8 is. You don't have to answer if you don't want to".

Some people blurt out an answer (usually wrong), others take their time and work it out (7^2 = 49 and add another 7 for example or even 7, 14, 21...56). I have never, thus far, employed someone that just blurted out the wrong answer. One day I probably will if I ever interview people again.

Everybody "of a certain age" can just blurt out the right answer. We used to march round the classroom chanting our tables.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

this means I go down to Worcester to see the game and I either leave him down there so he can have match tea with his friends and go back to his own school after parents evening, or I drag him to parent's evening.

Its tough, but if its the worst that happens he's a lucky boy. :)

Some of the nastiest cattiest comments in my life I've heard while listening to matchside mothers, if I had kids there is no way I'd be going to every single game at all. But then, my parents came to zero of mine, whereas my sister never misses one....each, IMO, has its own pluses and minuses for the kids.

They admitted to spending £400k on the house. How much would a more conventional house have cost? (Allow £15k in the calcs for the solar panels feeding back into the grid.)

I know this is old but my keyboard is working now and the laptop isn't conking out. Last time I replied twice at length and the laptop just switched itself off twice. I still haven't bought a keyboard, sometimes it's fine.

The Denby Dale passivhaus was built for £141,000 and it's 118 metres.

bere:architects reckon they can build one for £1300 a metre. The cheaper one they built looks a bit social housing for my liking. People have criticised how much they spend on windows too, saying it is possible to get them a bit cheaper, meaning that the larch house, which is better looking but more expensive to build, could be a lot cheaper to build.

The panels are ugly, but I had a chat with a man who tells me that he'll have brought a proper PVT roof covering to the market some time next year.

Numbers that get banded around are that it is possible to build for 7-15% more than a regular house. I've got a fancy estimating software package now, so I can plug numbers in before we build anything. What I'm frightened by is architects fees!

I'd like the question seven times six. Its the one that is always ingrained. I'd have to add on in my head between there and, er, what was the question again?

    You see the problem here.....:rotfl:

My house isn't warm yet, not given in and switched the heating on so it comes automatically. I did put it on for just less than an hour yesterday evening as eldest was complaining about being cold but that is as far as I have gone....wondering just how long I can hold on now, don't think I have ever been this late putting it on (although my feet currently feel like blocks of ice)

Apart from that, not much to report today......
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Ah but people like pn and me who call a spade a spade would probably just answer 56 straight off without thinking - I would then probably try and backtrack as my brain clicked in and tried to work out what the trick was...

Middle son is very good at rugby, the head of PE calls him his best player....he has the build to scare the beejesus out of the opposition when they see him barrelling his way towards them :rotfl:

Youngest son would probably just bore the life out of everyone until they went to sleep talking about Apple products and then get a try....that is if the school worked with us in actually getting him into pe kit. The PE teacher won't allow him to do a gradual move over to pe kit and so, won't allow him to take part.
