Anyone watching Grand Designs Revisited? Love, love, love. I want a Passivhaus. A lot. We're going to see if we can build one (that's what I've been researching instead of being on the HB board) but we're so busy trying to piece together the existing house that there's no time to concentrate on the potential new house. But soon :) We may not get it right down to Passivhaus standard - I can't get my head around not having a fireplace. We'll see.

That's part of the posh factor ... most 1-bed flats and studios don't have them. There's no fireplace here where I am now either and I hadn't even noticed until this posting.

Not spotted anyone with Iceland coloured red, has anyone been (as a tourist), as we are thinking of going next year for a short break.

Not as a tourist exactly, but my uncle spent 3 months there, and my mother 4 months (in different years). My uncle was learning Norse, which is very similar to Icelandic. My mother was doing field work for her master's degree, which was on the interaction of volcanicity and glaciation.

My Mama went by boat from near Edinburgh - this was in 1968, I think. She said she thought the food laid out was incredibly generous, and then realised how they could afford it - because most people were too sea-sick to eat (-:

They admitted to spending £400k on the house. How much would a more conventional house have cost? (Allow £15k in the calcs for the solar panels feeding back into the grid.)
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Before we got our current house we rented near our current area -it was a "townhouse" but really far out on the edge of London. It was a 3-storey terrace in a gated private road and was a six-apartment ie six living/bedrooms but 4 toilets including 2 en-suites.
Had satellite, cable and a small back garden. Actually ticked a lot of boxes but no fireplace. Never noticed until today!

The big no-no was that you had to get in a car to buy anything from a box of matches upwards. Plus you could hear your neighbours breathing, holding their breath, standing still, growing a beard, you name it.

Minor point was if you forgot anything it was always two floors away because the first floor wasn't properly utilised. Specially weird moment was when i went to use the toilet and I realised I was using a toilet accessible from a room we hadn't got round to naming yet.

When we moved in there was only one fireplace left and that has gone in the extension - I guess we might have one of those pretend ones on the wall but we are always centrally heated to a comfortable temperature so fires would be for psychological effect only.

We do have 3 bathrooms and a shower room for 4/5 bedrooms now which seems about right to me. I have bought a wide-angle camera on ebay tonight so hopefully I will be able to post some room pictures in the other place soon.
    I think....
