My church places a high value on trying to be a place where people can feel comfortable whether they believe stuff or live the lifestyle or not. Not that it's some kind of ultra-woolly "doesn't matter what you believe" kind of place. More "we believe xyz to be the truth, and abc to be the right way to live, but everyone's welcome to belong here whether or not they agree".
I like that attitude.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly. I saw a lovely joke that was doing the rounds of Facebook recently.
After all these Blackberry problems recently, what if there were problems with iPhones too? The headlines could read "Blackberry and Apple crumble".
With the worst timing, Blackberry held its Innovation convention yesterday.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I've always had some kind of vague prejudice mildly in favour of Jews, though. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've liked all the ones I've known personally so far.
I didn't notice this earlier. I think one of the things I really do like about dh's extended family is that they are warm and intellectually curious. One of the very sad things that I read somewhere, no idea where, was a retaliation to the submission that there are lots of rich, middle and uppermiddle class Jews and why is that? The ''retaliation'' was that it was easier for a richer and better educated person to get their family out of dangerous areas in Europe before the War. While many left behind possessions and money, they did bring aspiration and their own education with them.
Incidentally I read a teenagers/kids book this week, the name of which I've forgotten ATM, hang on ...google image http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/jun/24/between-shades-grey-sepetys-review a sort of Lithuanian fictional Anne Frank type story. Same sort of thing really.....makes it hard to hold ones head up as a human being.0 -
Being away from your friends, family and business for 3.5 years is a long time and even open prisons will be full of the sort of people you wouldn't want to mix with.
3.5 years -that's not even two million minutes.vivatifosi wrote: »A friend of mine works in an open prison.
She says that the nicest people are the fraudsters, followed by the murderers, and the least pleasant are the muggers and assaulters. So you could be in for murder and still not like the people you have to mix with.
Whoah - slow down there! Murderers, muggers, assaulters! What open prison is this!

I hope so. My church places a high value on trying to be a place where people can feel comfortable whether they believe stuff or live the lifestyle or not. Let me confess: If I could commit a victimless crime (or at least pretty victimless) that netted me £100m and only cost me my reputation and 3 years in open prison, I'd be tempted. I hope I'd gain an OU degree as well as the £100m, by the way.
OTOH, I just couldn't conceive of going round swindling individuals out of their savings. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
I had half a mind to join the NF- but apparently I was over-qualified.
This isn't really connected to the quaker thread but more that GDBs post made me think of this joke, which is supposed to follow on the jokes theme. Apologies if it caused offence.I have quite a hankering to be a Quaker, actually.I think....0
