I noticed an old post by Pobby on another thread, got me wonderng how he was doing, I hope he is OK.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0

OMG I'm so upset. I found big dog on her bed with a dead chicken this evening when putting the dog-dog out after supper (the dogs eat separately because big dog is a food bully). The gates were shut so chicken must have wriggled under. And it wasn't any old chicken, it was my beloved Cuckoo, the chicken I'd had since the first flock I had as an adult.
She was such a lovely bird, cuddly and funny and the cockerals favourite. We had her from a chick when dh did his law conversion.
Big dog is really on thin ice. She is incredibly stupid and a bully with dog dog and since my father house sat last year impossible to trust with chickens and in fact, very iuntrustworthy with the cats too.Her saving grace is that she is super with people and children, but I really feel fed up with her tonight. poor little Cuckoo was a doll of a bird and just a darling. She was quite old, and I suppose now I won't have to worry so much about her in winter but how horrid.

Yes, he does. He's amazing. When she was taken ill, he gave up everything else (and he was one of those very active old people who belongs to this and that, and always goes along to the other) to be her carer. When she's at home, he has carers come in the morning to do her bedbath and get her up, and another carer in the evening to put her to bed, but apart from that he does it all. He gets respite care 3 times a week (2hrs, 2hrs & 4hrs) but otherwise it's him, 24/7. She has a hospital bed in the big downstairs room, and he sleeps on the floor next to it, on a narrow horsehair mattress about an inch thick (issued to him in 1944 when he was a naval rating), in case she needs him in the night. He's 85, and has been doing all that for the last two years, apart from the last few weeks to have his second knee done, and a few weeks in the spring when he had the first knee replaced.
He says she gave him everything he wanted out of life for 50 years, so now how could he want anything other than to do whatever will most help her?
I do what I can to help, but I'm limited by being on my own with the children, and working, and living an hour away. My brothers all help as far as they can too, but they're all a lot further away, with full time jobs and families, so they're limited too. Wheezy, I know just how you feel about "I ought to be there".
So sorry to hear about Cuckoo, lir. Horrible to lose such a special bird, but even worse to know it was Big Dog who did it.
ETA I just remembered - my brother tells me my dad has decided to give up on the sleeping on the floor thing. It will make the room more cluttered, but he's accepted he ought to have a bed of some kind in there by the time she comes home and he moves back downstairs.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
I'm tired. Guess that's what you get for going to the football on a school night! Still, good result.
Thanks for the support over there folks. I'll respond/repost soon. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

And I'm grumpy! The folk who live behind our old garden have started negotiating with us for it......and at the moment they're offering less than half what we'd consider it's worth.
Somehow I don't see any meeting of minds here. We have to weigh up the pros of selling it now and doing something useful with the money, like putting solar panels on our barn, or toughing it out, by which time the FiTs will be much lower.
Decisions!0 -

davesnave,
does it have any worth as an allotment? The idea of people not them coming in daily to garden it might even see neighbours up offer or other neighbours bid. They don't need to know you'd rather sell it if you are prepared to merket it as such......0 -

Oh yes, it would have to be, but it's how long we take to get there!
Nice idea lir. If we don't get a sale, we'll probably do something like you suggest on a yearly basis.
Unfortunately, it's not the sort of place where I could arrange to park something like a few scrap cars. Someone needing a secure space for chickens + a c0ckerel would be just great!0
