Am impersonating the living dead. Only managing to get two hours sleep at a stretch before something wakes me up. Finding it incredibly hard to concentrate on anything. Even the most basic things are taking ages to do and I'm double checking myself because of it.

Finally sorted my car insurance yesterday. The three cheapest quotes were from companies with atrocious reviews of the don't touch this even if you're totally desperate variety. Ended up paying £80 more but figured the peace of mind would be worth it in the end. Its was still £85 cheaper than my renewel quote, half the excess and reinstated my 3rd party priviliges so its not as bad as it sounds. Did very little else all day.

DD1 came home from her additional English classes full of enthusiasm and proceeded to read her book out loud something shes refused to do for ages. It helps that the story was interesting and didn't feature Biff, Chip, Kippper or Floppy. Fingers crossed this continues and they make more headway than the primary school senco with her tracing of words in multicoloured pencil did.

I am SOOOOOO with you on this one. OK DS isn't inclinded to do any reading, 5 mins with a book (which is how school see it) is in actual fact more like 15 mins as he studies the book, has to chivvied along all just to read the most tedious book on earth. Inspiring him to read? Don't bet on it.

It can be very difficult to get an reluctant reader interested. I have one of those. In the end I let him read anything as long as it held his interest. Hence why we have a lot of Pokemon books (roll eyes). And Beastquest Books.... They aren't really his age level, but it is improving the reading of other things, and I will take that as progress.

I take it she has been tested for dyslexia? We have only just found out that DS1 has Irlen Syndrome. Which is a type of dyslexia....

Sorry to hear about the lack of sleep. Pity you can't use ear plugs.....

Walked in the door from work on the point of exhaustion. Started falling asleep midway through my cuppa so went to bed. Awoke four hours later to the smell of frying bacon. OH had cleaned the kitchen. Must remeber to look like shoite more often. Feel more human than I have in ages.

DD1 doesn't have any one specific thing, just developmental delays. She'll get there in her own time. At least this school are working to improve the things she can do rather than banging on about the things she can't and making her do pointless soul destroying exercises with no obvious benefit.

Incidentally I loved Roger the Red Hat and Malory Towers.... I'm now a David Walliams convert.

  • Oo - can definitely empathise on Roger Red Hat, Billy Blue Hat and Jonathan and Jennifer Yellow Hat, but was a Trebizon girl rather than Mallory Towers.

We now have Michael Morpogo books, lots of dragon training, stacks of Doctor Who and top gear - anything they want to read, really, to get and keep them inspired.

Dont you just want to shoot Biff Kipper and Chip sometimes and what daft names................ DS2 hated reading, and in a family of BIG readers this was a litle disturbing at first. I stopped the whole read at home thing half way through year 2 when I was satisfied she could read. Had a run in with the class teacher over it....and me a teacher and all that. Didnt go down very well. She was in fact reading at a much higher level than the school realised and something they never acknowledged for the rest of the time she was there. :(

  • I have to admit I have no recollection of reading books at school myself - beyond standing at the teachers desk reading out loud while they marked other work and having to take two copies of my reading books home with a list of notes for my parents as the school didn't believe I could possibly actually be reading the books as quickly as I was - and I really was reading that quickly, it was even commented on while I was at uni that I read things freakishly quickly and still absorb the same quantity of information as someone reading at half the pace.

But god the set books are deathly dull and really rather silly in all areas as I do remember helping my sister when she was learning to read, lets hope that the school continue to find things which actually stimulate her wanting to learn.

It was the idea of arriving at school with a steamer trunk full of cake and sweets that swung it for me. I loved anything like that... especially anything totally unPC. Bring back Fatty and the Five Find Outers... makes my mouth water just thinking about the macroons and chocolate eclairs.

Returned yesterdays book to school and was most surprised when DD1 arrived home with five more. None of this one book per child malarky. She promptly read one about a surfer and tried negotiating staying up late to read another. DD2 took advantage of this and curled up in front of the fire in an armchair. She was still reading away at 10pm when I noticed her on my way to bed. No doubt she'll be a nightmare in the morning.
