I have an hsbc account that I keep open in case I need any other hsbc products in the future (like their competitive mortgages) but this is likely to make me decide it is too much hassle. I will be extremely upset if FD introduce them as I don't want to change my mortgage at the moment.

I find the secure key thing annoying too, but would you seriously consider moving you mortgage to avoid it? Wow. It's really not that bad, and with FD you can always use their excellent phone banking instead, can't you?

This sort of device should be only needed to set up new one off payments, standing orders etc. as an extra safety measure, not to log in to your account. I check my accounts every day. I would hate being forced to use a card reader to log in.

I agree with the above. The only issue that I could see is that the fact that setting up a new payee is such an infrequent thing for me - I may have misplaced my little calculator thingy when I need to use it. At the moment it is on my key ring - which is a bit of a pain.

I do also think that having an app on a phone would be good. We used to use a Secure ID fob to log onto VPN when accessing work data from home. This is now on my Blackberry. People at work who do not have a Blackberry still have the key fob. Only issue is is that there is a licence to pay for each device - I wonder if the flimsy key pads issued to HSBC customers do not have a licence.

Kind of reassuring to read I'm not the only one moaning about the HSBC secure key. ;) I've had to reset the password 4 times already and consequently dont bother to check my online accounts as much as I used to. In fact I've even found it quicker some days to nip into the branch and use the statement machine there instead!

I dont know how people are walking round with these attached to their car keys - they're far too big for that in my opinion. I've got mine stashed away in a drawer, but means I can only log in when I'm at home.

Also, can anyone tell me if anything will happen if one of the kids gets hold of it and starts generating codes - will I have problems the next time I use it?

  • Activated my husbands stupid key (he's no good with internet banking) and the dam thing locked on me.
Phoned the helpline, but because I spoke to them before my husband, they promptly locked down his account and said a new key would be sent in 5 working days! That was 8 working days ago.
This morning he received a letter saying he had to go into the bank with ID to unlock his account. What a load of b******s! And still no sign of the Stupid Key. I am so frustrated I could tear paper!!!

I too don't check my HSBC account as often now. It's a great shame they've introduced this as their IB site is amongst the best.
Whilst my posts do not constitute financial advice, I am always, without fail, 100% right! :D

As far as they were concerned, someone else was trying to access your husband's accounts. You shouldn't know any of his security details, and he shouldn't have given them to you. Their actions are entirely reasonable.

    Hi,

I didn't mind the keypad when I first had it.

BUT after a few weeks in my wallet (I am not a purse toting woman) the 3 key has been permanently depressed (like me) so it will not switch on. This means i can’t do online banking.

I love internet banking. A few months ago, I was in town with the missus to get our holiday money. She didn’t bring any ID, so I had to get it. No problem I logged into the bank and transferred the money and then bought our cash. Problem solved.

Now I have to get the keypad out of my wallet and prey it hasn't broken again :(

    Hi again,

I just got off the phone with HSBC and after forgetting my security number and security word (as I dont telephone bank) I finally got a new card sent out.

And I only wasted half of my lunch break to sort it out.

I also agree that they should also do an App, making it easier for people to use. I always carry my phone, and it doesn't break in my pocket, lol.

Would I consider changing my bank because of this? YES!
Do I consider changing banks a bit over the top? No. I can change mobile, internet and utility providers because of service and cost, so why not banks for changing their terms of use. (ie i cant use online banking without using a bit of easily broken plastic)

I hate this thing with a passion.

Why can't they do what all the other banks do. THey have annoying security features but ONLY when you want to transfer money out of your accounts. And even then, thats only when its a NEW account you've never transferred to before. So much easier and just as safe.
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
