Dealing with recruitment agencies – advice

Im a bit naive in the field of recruitment/agents. I guess a lot of this rubbish is due to a vast majority of fake jobs being advertised in order to collect CVs and information about who's recruiting, market trends etc. If a job is fake then it stands to reason...that there is no way they can provide any legit info on a specific job.0
-
on the contrary, I doubt very much any jobs in my area would be direct, most hoteliers use an agency to headhunt key positions.0

Never happened to me, I'm always told the company in the first conversation about a role, the agent wants to know that I'll bother taking the job if it's offered after all. There's also nothing to protect as they're putting my CV forward anyway if I agree so I'm not about to sneak around and apply directly when I'm already being put forward for the role.
This has been the case in both London and Edinburgh, with general recruiters and industry specific ones.
Can I also say LadyMissA, as hard a time as you are having looking for work (as I am), all of your posts are very angry, doesn't make for comfortable reading to think of someone that angry all the time. Can't help but feel it may taint your job searching in some way. Maybe not too but it's just an observation.
I am angry my company have ruined my life and that for the last 12 months I have dont nothing every day including Sat/Sun applying and looking for jobs. I am angry as I sit here and think often my family would be better off if I was dead & I am angry I have had to borrow money and get more in debt. £1000's more in debt!
Not sure how you think sending a CV (cause I am an angry person) is stopping me getting an interview where an agency told me the other day that they had 1000 people apply.
thanks anyway0 -
If she is positioning me with a global international brand, as was potentially the case, she needs to know where my cv has been beforehand!:) After all, she was working for me, trying to position me for my next role.
agencies work for the client not the candidate as they pay the fees not you0 -

Then I will reiterate my earlier post...we have vastly different experiences...!
Professional head hunters do not wait until there is a job to be filled..they are constantly networking and looking for opportunities. The person that placed me in my last role four years ago has actively marketed me down under as i want to go back there. I do not intend to pay her a fee. but who is she working for...? she is using her global contact to place me....not responding to a short term need...she missed out on placing me in my current role which I started a few weeks ago, but you can bet your life she has now had a conversation with my boss, and will be looking for new strategic placements for the company/for him etc.0 -
incidentally, do you have a linkedin profile? Loads of opportunities coming that way at moment0

yes and thats what agencies tell me they are doing, calling companies and talking about my CV etc to try and get business for them and me a job but no luck or so they say. One said the other day they can't look for me anymore as I have been out of work too longThen I will reiterate my earlier post...we have vastly different experiences...!

A lot of it is down to good contacts. Having good agents on your side helps massively. Unfortunately with me (and many others) - I've not built up any relationships with good recruiters during my career because I suffer the same problems with them over and over then eventually end up getting offered a job that I've applied to directly.0
