An hour commute in London is nothing. I commuted 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 minutes for a minimum wage job - either getting 2 buses, or 1 bus and a mile walk. The tube would have taken about the same time as I live in NW and worked in Park Royal (West London) so no direct trains. Done that for a year. It was annoying at times, but I used that time.

I currently have a 45 minute or an hour commute depending on which job I'm at (been at 2 different work places in past few months). I find that delays on the tube usually are every couple of weeks on the line(s) I use. Most delays are short, it doesn't double the time, as I usually find an alternative route than staying on a slow moving train. I get the bus back from work at one place that takes about an hour and I use that time to phone friends/family have a good chat, or listen to music, play Angry Birds, go on facebook.etc or sometimes when I'm tired, have a nap!

I find buses are always more delayed than the tube. Once I got a bus into work, I left my house 5 minutes later than usual. Took me 2.5 hours to get there! Had to phone work (cinema) saying the buses were being stupid, as one terminated about 6 stops after I got on and had to wait 25 minutes for another one! That's the most extreme case, happened once in 1 year. Tube lines are more reliable than buses.

Look - stop trying to justify a stupid decision.

An hour's travel is nothing in the great scheme of things and tbh if I don't have to do the driving then the journey home is my wind down time so that by the time I get home the frustrations of the day have passed.

I agree an hour is not much in the scheme of things.

But my journey home used to cause me more stress than my job. My partner told me I was gonna have a heart attack if I didnt stop it s I would arrive home angry most days !

Thats what you get for using First Great Western, or 'First Late/worst Western' !

But if the journey was purely the tube it wouldnt have been quite so bad I guess. But I try to avoid uses the tube and use buses as at least if they break down, unlike the tube you can get off.
  • I think you may be getting the drift of this thread - you asked for opinions and you got them so please don't be rude to others as you have to take the bad with the good; it's an open forum and not everyone has to agree with you. For many of us, especially those unfortunate not to be supported by family, who have been looking for a long time, very hard, facing rejection not because they're not good but because there are so many people out there similarly applying, you have to understand that your attitude is quite shocking. May be you don't realise how hard it is out there, perhaps you've been used to having work or study close by, but I really do think you have to have a much more open mind if you want to earn a good wage and do something you really want to do.

Let me ask you this - if someone called you about a role that you thought you could really do, was exciting and had great potential development, progression and salary-wise, would location come into it? You don't need to answer it, just asking you to think about that as it's food for thought.

Another entry in the longest commute DSW....

13 mile drive to the train station - 18 minutes
    90 mile train journey - 70 minutes
    4 mile train journey - 10 minutes
    15 minute walk

Monthly cost is £634 for the train and £109 for parking.
  • I don't care what the employer think, even if he doesn't want to interview me, I can look for other jobs.

You clearly don't grasp the fact, that when you apply for jobs, the employers don't tell you where the job location is. The job could be 5 minutes away, but the employer told me it was in an area that was 56 minutes. I clearly should of written that since some people are too stupid to understand.

If you dont care what the employer thinks then why bother applying for any jobs at all?

The employer rings you up and says "we would like you to attend an interview at XX" whilst they are on the phone why dont you try looking it up and see where it is then you can tell them whether it is too far for you or not

MY OH Leaves just after 7am to get to his work at 9am

I live work at 7:30 to get to my work at 9am

you have little sympathy from me

Change your submission statement on the jobs website to put "will not travel more than XX minutes" then you wont be wasting anyones time

I already get 2 buses to and from work, an hr each way. Not taking into account dropping DS off to school and picking up. An hrs commute is nothing, and I know people who do longer commutes, if you want a job, you'll figure it out.

I wonder if you were already working for the company 56 minutes away, would leave to do your current job, only 25 minutes away for a pay cut?

I would suggest it's always worth at least going to the interview, not only is it valuable interview experience, you would have a lot more to go on to make the best decision.

It seems like people are really annoyed with me not attending an interview. I am happy with my current job, so I think it was a mistake in applying in the first place.

It was your reasons and and excuses for not attending the interview that got peoples backs up. You based you decision on an online predictor of the commuting time, didn't even test the route to see if it was unfeasible!

You might be happy working part-time and living at home but are your parents...................

So that makes the OP wrong because he has different criteria for changing jobs than you do?

You sound bitter. Maybe you should find a job nearer to home.. I would.

The other annoying thing about the actions of the OP is that there is usually a set number of interviewees chosen and the place of perhaps someone whao was deperate to have a job was taken by someone who couldn't decide if he really wanted the job.
