One of the lines in the t and c states

Passengers must be able to produce their ticket on demand by any Company employee (or other person so authorised for inspection). Any person who fails to produce a valid ticket for the journey may be asked to leave the vehicle or pay the maximum single fare on the route being travelled.

IMO that means yould have to print out your ticket as per instructions and physically have the ticket in your hand.

So instructions say print ticket, t and c say you have to have ticket pretty clear to me!

Indeed, because if for any reason the device fails, due to a technical issue, or something as simple as a dead battery, the passenger could not comply with the terms and conditions of carriage.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Perhaps we have to go to the other extreme e.g. the Swiss way of doing it. My ticket from this morning states

The online ticket must be printed as follows : Full size (not scaled), on white previously unprinted A4 paper, portrait, with a resolution of at least 600dpi

I love using the electronic versions where possible but only where it explicitly states that this format is acceptable. The last thing I want is some over-zealous ticket inspector trying to stamp my iPhone :rotfl:

Rubbish. He only breaks the T&C's IF the device fails, not because it might.
You could say a paper ticket isn't valid because it might get blown out of the window by your logic.

    Any update from you OP?

    From the CS this afternoon..
    Dear Mr. XXXX

Thank you for your email. I understand your frustration regarding the e ticket terms and conditions. On the print out confirmation it does state that you must take a hard paper copy of the confirmation to allow you to board. I have spoken to my manager to ensure the terms and conditions on the website are made clearer in the future.

    Kind Regards

Satisfied everyone now. The confirmation of the email they send you states that a hard paper copy of the confirmation. So obviously the OP didnt read the email confirmation properly.

    1) We only have the CS's word for that.
    2) It should be a visible term that a hard paper copy is a condition before the OP places his order, not just in a confirmation email sent afterwards.

I'm glad the CS have understood the need to change their terms, and hope this helps the OP get the refund.

    I still dont get it

IF the t and c state that the ticket must be produced on demand, how could you do that if you havent printed a hard copy

To me producing an image on a screen isnt producing a ticket or am i just getting old?

Thats strange; because in the OP's opening post, they provides a link that says it does.....
No the OP does not do this, you need to understand what T&C are and their significance in a contract. not only that, the casually worded info linked to in the OP does not even mention the consequences of not having a print out on a bit paper.

An image of the ticket on a computer screen is just as good as an image of the ticket on a bit paper, there is no difference between them in terms of information given and proof of purchase.

But if, as in OP case the item did not fail he does comply.

Because the T&cs only ask that a ticket must be produced. i think you would not find any judge to make any distinction between a paper printout or an image on a screen of what would have been printed out

Not satisfactory at all, There's no mention of having to read the confirm email in the T&C's. I rarely read confirm emails. I note down the ref# and give it to them at check in (cross channel ferries) on National Express I did print the tickets but I don't know what would happen if I had only taken a ref# or a laptop image like OP. but I don't ever pay much attn to the emails, I rarely open them, I have the booking ref so why would I want to read the info again in the email? Putting this info in an email is not good enough, and would not stand up in court anyway IMHO. I also ask why you contacted CS you didn't have the same problem as OP did you? So now they might change the T&C before OP has a chance to print them out as evidence.....great!
