My baby is critical!!!!

My 14 year old baby girl (cat) is critically ill at the vets. She's been there since 2pm today, and is sedated and on a drip. They've done various blood tests, and the vet says she has high white blood cells, and so is fighting some kind of infection, so they've added antibiotics to the drip, and she has low potassium (the lowest the vet says she's ever seen), so they've added some salts to her drip too. She's extremely dehydrated and weighs 1.68kg. She's a small petite little thing anyway, but now she's just all skin and bones. She's also constipated. She has asthma and a heart murmer. Her temperature has dropped to 36 degrees and they have her in an incubator. I have to ring in an hour to check on her condition.
I'm sat here heartbroken and crying. She sleeps with me, how will I sleep tonight? Will she pull through? Will her brother pine for her like dogs do? She keeps herself to herself, and the vet says it's difficult to tell when cats are ill because they hide it so well. She does, it's only when she's very poorly that we get her whipped in to the vets.
You know when they get older that it's just a matter of time, but nothing really prepares you for it.

Sometimes you're the dog, but more often you're the tree!:D

Thanks, I just keep thinking I should've seen it quicker, but she hides upstairs under my SD's bed during the day, and sleeps on top of me during the night, so I don't see her that much. I love her to pieces though. Wish love could cure illness!:(Sometimes you're the dog, but more often you're the tree!:D0 -
:grouphug: Fingers crossed for your girl, she is in the best place she can be at this time. Your vet is spot on saying cats hide discomfort and pain well, sometimes they even fool the vets. Is your girl a very tiny build? That seems to be a very low weight.
Why does she hide so much? Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
I had a cat who did a very good job of hiding how poorly she was. It seems to be something cats do. Please don't feel bad about it.butterflylady131 wrote: »Thanks, I just keep thinking I should've seen it quicker, but she hides upstairs under my SD's bed during the day, and sleeps on top of me during the night, so I don't see her that much. Hi, yes she is usually tiny. Her usual weight is just 2.0kg's at best, so for her to dip to 1.68kg's is just too much. She has a steroid injection for her asthma every 4 weeks and she just had one yesterday, and the vet said that prolonged use of steroids can weaken the immune system. Just don't know where to go from here.Sometimes you're the dog, but more often you're the tree!:D0

Oh, please don't beat yourself up about not noticing sooner - as others have said, pets are very good at hiding being unwell, until they're really unwell:sad:
