  • I think the key to stuff like that is to make a transition in steps... I do not believe that "I am going to change 100% right now" approach works.

If I were you I would write down all the things you eat for a week and then split them into healthy and unhealthy. It is all about a definition of healthy and unhealthy as well. I know that some people find baked items totally unhealthy, but I like them and I think a bit of what you like makes you happy! And I bake everything myself...

lots and I mean lots, of veg and fruit in all the different colours. I have a greenlife juicer and make veg juices every day, eg broccolli +apple+carrot

little meat ie 500g does 2 meals for 2. No more than twice a week. Fish 3 times a week, includes mackerel and sardines eg sardines on toast

generally wholemeal bread (hm with organic flour)

    seeds and nuts

sweet potatoes instead of some potatoes

    cook with olive oil

I am no saint but I do aim for the above. We do have snacks and cakes etc but the above is the basis of our food and the food is gorgeous. Add variety to that list

i'm doing a few things right then,i cook with olive oil, i only ever eat sweet potatoes, wholemeal bread and i did use to make smoothies.i will re start that ;) thank you

i aim to get my pre babies body back ASAP...I need to do what i used to do, a gallon of water daily, vitamins, two healthy home cooked meals a day...etc

    Loads of veg and fruit.

Small amount of good quality meat bulked out with veg and pulses- so a spag bol for us is 300g lean butchers mince, twice that weight in veg and a handful of lentils.

I'm happy for my kids and me to have cakes and treats but they are hm usin dried fruit, nuts, seeds and real butter! I'd rather they ate sugar and butter than artificial sweeteners and hydrogenated fats any day.

For me eating healthy means a balance of things, not exculding any one group of food, variety, using small amounts of high quality meat and bulking it out with veg to fill any hunger gaps.

My lot don't do wholemeal bread of pasta but I try and get wholegrains in to their cereal (porridge, hm granola) and can sneak in wholemeal cous cous and brown rice occasionally.

  • I make sure I have healthy snacks in the house e.g. oat cakes which are low GI, bran flakes & wholemeal bread in the freezer so that even if I'm feeling lazy I can still eat healthily.

I like the Nairn oat cakes as they come in little packets in the boxes. I have a stash at work to keep me off the chocolate bars.

Dried seaweed is very nutritious easy snack. It's about £1 from a Japanese / chinese store for a decent sized bag. A tiny amount soaked in water swells to a lot. I have it instead of green veg.

Batch cook some healthy meals for the freezer e.g. soup, chickpea curry, lentil dhal so you only have to cook 1/2 the week.

Some things keep for ages untouched e.g. butternut squash whereas strawberries & blueberries go mouldy in the fridge after a couple of days. I used to throw lots of food away but now I avoid the short life products unless I have bought them to eat on a specific day.

If you have the space stock up on the nicer tinned tomatoes when they are on special offer. It doesn't take much longer than the time it takes to cook pasta to make your homemade pasta sauce with onions, garlic, fresh basil, capers , olives & anything else you fancy.

    Weekly I buy
    - carrots as they are tasty & cheap - nice raw & carrot & coriander soup is a fav of mine
    - rocket - very nice stirred in with pasta or to have as a salad
    - broccolli - again nice raw with olive oil drizzled over
    I can if I think I can.

On a weekly basis I buy fruit & veg from the local farm shop - so its generally whatever's in season with some imported fruit in the winter.

At the moment, for example, I'm buying squash (various kinds), onions, spinach, calabrese, kale, leeks, cabbage, carrots, pears, apples, oranges, salad (grown in polytunnels) and tomatoes (imported, but I need them for salads for work!). I also get my eggs here when I need them.

I also sprout beans to ensure I have salad materials to hand for work lunches, even if I run out of stuff from the farm shop.

Fortnightly I stock up on yogurt & fruit juices, cottage cheese, goats cheese and maybe a bit of hard cheese or blue cheese for cooking.

I don't use much milk, so have some organic long life milk in the cupboard with rice & oat milk (for variety - I prefer them for porridge).

I keep meat & fish in the freezer, buying them when I see good quality at good prices (I try to eat local & organic meat where possible), together with portions of batch-cooked meals so that I know that there is always something healthy available when I'm hungry. I also keep hm cakes in there, both whole (for visitors) and bits (for quick snacks). And plenty of hm chicken stock for quick soups or vegetable & noodle meals.

I keep a huge range of pulses and grains in the cupboards (white rice, risotto rice, brown rice, black rice, jasmine rice, red rice, red lentils, black lentils, puy lentils, green lentils, quinoa, millet, pot barley, couscous, cannellini beans, flageolet beans - and that's just what I can remember  ), which I buy from the health food shop where I also get tofu (both the hard and soft stuff, and the flavoured tofu which is great for salads & packed lunches) which freezes well. I also keep a huge variety of dried pasta & noodles (made with different grains) in the cupboards, and some fresh pasta (again, I stock up when I see stuff I like on offer) in the freezer.

Generally I try to eat mostly vegetables, with a small amount of high-quality protein and enough carbs to keep me going but not so much that it makes me tired - and I try to have the carbs at breakfast and lunch, so I have plenty of energy during the day.

If you're trying to lose weight/get your figure back, you'll obviously need to take exercise as well, as diet alone (sadly) won't do the job! Good luck!

  • i want to start eating "right";)

    kind regards

There are loads of good suggestions here already :T

I'd make a menu plan of what you want to eat, and include plenty of seasonal fruit and veg - sprouts and other brassicas, parsnips, carrots, swede, potatoes. You can then make a shopping list :D

I'd also plan in at least 3 meat-free main meals (take a look at Gingham Ribbon's menu plans for more ideas ;) ).

Plan to cook everything from scratch. That way you know what's in your food. The occasional home-baked treat won't hurt.

Drink plenty of fluids - water is good, and not too much caffiene or carbonated drinks.

Take exercise and get enough sleep :D

We have an existing thread on Healthy Eating, so I'll add this later.

Don't buy all this at once, or you'll end up wasting stuff...I find that making a plan and then sticking to it is the healthiest way of eating LOL!
