The US e-book is interesting. If you go to The Hillbilly Housewife, there are links to an African American and Spanish American cook e-books w hich are very good.
The get rich slowly was very interesting. The posts were good too, I followed a link for something and got a newspaper article about the Mcanns and Maddie, it gave a very different slant on the situation from the british press - definately anti the parents!
As for the feeding on $15 and other frugal feeding threads is pretty much what you will read on these threads. however, it is always interesting to see it somewhere else.
Always great to have new links to follow. Welcome and enjoy the forums.0 -
I have decided that I need to think more about what I am feeding us as a family (watched that Jamie Oliver thing last night) anyway, I don't think we are too bad, don't do many takeaways or processed meats...however I want to only now have the better quality meat and so would like to cook more vegetarian food for my family (that I can get a 5 year old and 21 month twins to eat)
Any suggestions? on a tight budget so thinking maybe beany stuff? luckily my girls seem to quite like fish, but unfortunately don't seem to want to try eggs (although ds loves eggs!!)Jun GC £250.00/£12.40 NSD 3 / 30

For better meat, you can also buy cheaper cuts of meat, and cook it slowly - do you have a slow cooker?
Ham hocks for example, are what I am looking at at the moment for my new one - you need to get rid of the fat first though.
As for veggie (not necessarily beany)
My kids love felafel with salad and pitta bread (add chilli sauce for the grown ups!) (there is a recipe in the indexed collection).
Hummous with pitta bread and salad.
Chilli without the meat (add veggies they will eat)
Home made pizza
Macaroni cheese
Veggie lasagne (YUM!!)
Any 'mince' dish made with soya mince instead - buy in bulk from asian shops and it is SO cheap - lentils and beans also cheap there.)
Morrocan stew - spiced veggies and lentils served with cous cous
Lentil/chickpea curry with rice/nan bread
If I think of more I will return, but I'm sure there will be loads of great ideas coming along.0 -
I picked up an old 'delicious' magazine this morning. Wondered if they have a website, and they do. Lots of recipes there. Am in the same situation as you in that daughter is now vegetarian and I need to have more of those meals for when she is here. DH and DS still love their meat. I like everything!"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Re them not liking eggs...
My son is veggie and was (and still is a bit) very fussy about what he eats, he wouldn't eat eggs but would eat pancakes. I used to make pancakes with just eggs and a sprinkle of flour then spread with the no added sugar jam - in effect he was getting omelette in disguise. Eggy bread is another good one.
Lentil bolognaise is good - saute onions, add red lentils, loads of tom puree and stock, simmer until lentils are cooked. Nice and cheap and very yummy, freezes well too.0 -
i want to start eating "right";)
kind regards

lots and I mean lots, of veg and fruit in all the different colours. I have a greenlife juicer and make veg juices every day, eg broccolli +apple+carrot
little meat ie 500g does 2 meals for 2. No more than twice a week. Fish 3 times a week, includes mackerel and sardines eg sardines on toast
generally wholemeal bread (hm with organic flour)
seeds and nuts
sweet potatoes instead of some potatoes
cook with olive oil
I am no saint but I do aim for the above. We do have snacks and cakes etc but the above is the basis of our food and the food is gorgeous. Add variety to that list0 -
I also believe its how its prepared rather than what it is that makes something healtier, unfortunatly for some people that means cooking from scratch. I'd rather give my kids cakes & biscuits I've made than ones bought from supermarket with lower quality ingrediants and hydrogenated fats etc. Mediterranan diet is the best (fresh, basic food, uncomplicated) and moderation is everything. A little bit of everything is my mantra. I buy some 'low fat' products like yoghurt, soft cheese, cottage cheese but I generally don't buy reduced fat products such as sausages, biscuits etc. I prefer natural foods and just have them occasionally in moderation!0
