Never mind the Kids I think this might be a way I could get DH to eat more fruit!
Thanks for a great post0 -

All but four items off my whole trolley were reduced. here's some of the top of my head:
3 punnets organic peaches @39p each (going to make peach crumble with one)
3 punnets organic strawberries @ 29 p each
2 packets cold cooked chicken @ 20 p each/ 2 packets chicken tikka at same
4 PJ smoothies @ 20p each
3 cartons organic milk @10p each
5 packets cheddar @ 20 p each plus Red Leicester at same
Also bought loads of nice reduced rolls to make up with chicken and cheese to freeze.
Perhaps though I shouldn't mention the large bags of Indian meals @99p each or the chocolate coated doughnuts @ 20p a pack ....
Wow, some excellent bargains there!
I know all stores will vary but can I ask what time you visited your store for the clearance offers?:heart2: Tabs :heart2:

My Local Sainsburys that shuts at 8pm starts to mark down after 2pm they are not always very generous. But 3pm and after is better as they have finished marking down everything.
The other week I got 6 pints of Organic milk for 40p each. And 12 free range eggs for 90p. It is about the only time I can afford to buy organic and free range. And some tubs of yoghurt stuff for 10p.
But how good the reductions are just depends on who does it and how much they have of each.
On friday got a nice taste the difference steak pie for £1.99 down from £3.99 very yummy. I found that in my local lots of quiches seem to be reduced. Got some the other week for 50p each. Could not afford to make them for that.

Just done a very rough SOA on debt free thread and its very scary reading!
Can any one give me a weeks menu plan and shopping list for about £20-25 per week? You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs:rotfl:

Do a list of what you eat with the brands included. Then try the lower brand challenge. Each week try buying a cheaper alternative, and if you can't stand it go back to your original brand. Alsotry the ready made sauce challenge. Look at the ingredients on th epack of suace, and buy the most important six in store. MAke the sauce from scratch.,It takes a bit longer, but you make it to your taste, and it has no crap in it. (Oh, and its often cheaper)"Don't critisise what people look like, how they speak, where they are from, and what they are called. They cannot help it.
Do critisise what they say, and what they do, especially if what they say is different to what they do. They can help that"

Can't give you a menu plan but can give you a couple of tips we use regularly because we manage on a tiny budget.
Shepherds Pie
1 tsp oil
250g mince ( we use turkey or pork)
1or 2 onions
2 carrots
Tin baked beans
1/2 pt stock made with cube
1 tbsp tomato puree
2 tbsp Worcestershire souce (opt)
salt & pepper.
Mashed potato for topping.
Fry the onion and mince in the oil until the mince is evenly browned. Stir in all the other ingredients and cover. Simmer for approx 15 mins, stirring occasionally. Cook and mash your potatoes. Spoon mince mix into ovenproof dish and top with the mash. Dot with butter/marg. Place in oven at mark5/190 for 45mins.
There is plenty of protein for the little ones in this with the combo of mince and baked beans and mine love the thick rich gravy it produces. Was in some women's mag but have used it for years.
On the mega list there are fabulous recipes that people have posted. Home made pizza is a favourite and can be really healthy as kiddies will eat veggies in the topping and base sauce that they would faint at normally.
Hope someone else can help you, too. Lots of clever people on here.AUGUST GROCERY CHALLENGE £115.93/ £250

As cheerfulness says, there are lots of wonderful and cheap recipes on here.
When I'm trying to really cut back I have:
HM Pizza - let the eldest choose some of the toppings and decorate the pizza with you
Fish cakes (tinned tuna or mackerel or sardines mashed into mashed potato, herbs etc (you can add an egg but I don't) - pan fried (after chilling for half an hour) and served with veggies
Potato wedges - roughly chop some potatoes (with skins on) and give a light coating of oil and add whatever you like (we do herbs and parmesan or herbs and paprika) - in the oven at about 200C for 45 minutes. Serve with a HM dip (philly type cheese mixed with some plain yoghurt) or with whatever you like (nice with eggs and beans)
I make a big pan of HM bolognese - half goes with spaggetti one night and half goes with Jacket potatoes the next (or into freezer)
As I say there are lots more ideas on Old Style. Try making a list of the meals you want to make for a week. Cost up the ingredients and adjust according to your budget. For example I find chicken thighs are a lot more cost effective than chicken breasts (if you bone out a couple of chicen thighs you have plenty of meat for a stir fry or a small casserole).
Hope this helpsEnjoying an MSE OS life0 -
Well i just did a pan of chilli; soya mince, 2 tins tomatoes, tin of kidney beans, tin of canneli beans, tin of sweetcorn, an onion and some herbs and whatnot.. total cost about £1.30!0
