Called the council this morning and paid the £1247 and they confirmed it included the court fees.
I am going to write to the bailiff today too and ask them to advise on the extra costs.0 -
I am sending them this via post. Is it ok, or should I change it?
Dear Sir / Madam
I am writing to inform you that I have paid my council tax debt in FULL to Knowsley Council on 25th July 2011.
This amount was for £1247.41 and the total includes all court costs involved with the debt, as confirmed by the council themselves.
So can you confirm the following:
With reference to the above accounts, please provide me with a breakdown of all!fees!charged!
This includes:
a - the time & date of any!Bailiff!action that incurred a Fee.
b - The reason for the fee.
c - The name(s) of the!Bailiff(s) that attended on each occasion a Fee was charged.
d - The name(s) of the Court(s) the!Bailiff(s) was/were certificated at.
e - The date of the Certification.
The National Standards for Enforcement Agents state that if a written request is made an itemised account of!fees!will be provided.!
I have only received two lots of correspondence from yourselves and both were letters sent by second class post, which you legally cannot add a fee for. So I would like to know where the extra £125.50 comes from to make up your outstanding on £1374.91.
Please provide the information requested within 7 days!
Yours Faithfully0 -
The absolute maximum they can charge you for as they haven't levied on anything or been in the house etc is for 2 letters which is about 40 ish pounds - the scale of charges are on the National Debtlines factsheet on council tax( not sure how it works if they are second class though). It'll be interesting to see whether they try and justify their charges or whether they say errr 'oh no there' been a mistake' - er right.
Don't pay them until you find out what's what.
Oh I'd also edit the letter and take out your real name for posting on here - you never know who's reading etc. Letter seems o.k to me but I'm not an expert on these but if Hallowitch has provided it then that's the best thing to go for.

for council tax they cant charge for letters sent through the post
The reason a bailiff visits an address is to levy distress if no one is at home(they cant levy) then they must leave you a letter Telling you that a bailiff has called you are charged for the visit not for the letter (if you see what i mean)

A For making a visit to premises with a viewvisit:£18
to levying distress (where no levy is made) –
i) where the visit is the first or only such
visit £24.50
ii) where the visit is the second such
I am not an expert I am self taught i have no legal training any information I post is based on my own personal experience and information gained from other web sites

Charges don't apply at all for the bailiffs if they post the letters.
The letters they can charge for are not 'letters' in the normal sense, they are notice of a visit by a bailiff, with the intention of levying distress and thus need to be tied to an actual visit by an actual bailiff. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Not had a single visit, whether I have been home or not. No notes through the door or anything.
So will fight these charges and consider myself cleared of this debt. (Touch Wood)0 -
Keep at it. You are OK now.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

Fair enough -thanks to those for explaining (I was covering what I thought was the worst case scenario) but it sounds like Bradigor is in the clear.
Good Luck Bradigor.
