You may have tried this, but I once had to do a reset on Internet Explorer.

I DON'T THINK it upset the favorites but I can't quite remember.
The other possibility is DNS.
Putting a known IP address such as 192.168.1.1 (or whatever the router setup page is) would point to a DNS type problem if that page showed OK.0 -

Did that but didn't sort out the problem ...

Sorry, this is double-dutch to me ... what do I need to do ...0 -
Managed to sort the problem by restoring the netbook to its factory settings. Avira, Ccleaner, antimalwarebytes, Zone alarm and all 99 (!!!) windows updates installed.
Thanks everyone for your help and advice
Still don't know what caused the problem in the first place though !!!
Best regards

I'd take off zonealarm personally.
Just so you know, "antimalwarebytes" is a rogue
I know you mean Malwarebytes, but... not everyone will. 0 -
Russ you are correct .... I thought I needed a firewall....Hence Zonealarm ... ?0

use windows firewall, it will cause fewer problems, and won't slow the machine down!!
