Also try the basics, e.g. running in safe mode if you haven't already. Beyond that, it'll just be a matter of googling the symptoms and tracking down whatever esoteric reason might be behind it.

uninstall rapport, spybot, google toolbar, reset ie to defaults under tools, internet options, advanced.

are you getting prompted for browserchoice at boot?

how is the machine connected to the net?

if it still doesn't work, create a new user account and try it

Juat picked this up this morning but I am at work so i will have to wait until tonight to do this .... However, I use a WiFi connection using netgear but I don't have this problem with any other of my laptops at home - just my wifes
  • I wonder whether it is an internet connection problem or a browser problem.

Is there any other connection to the domestic network ?

    If you do

    Start

    Run

    Type "command" (no quotes)

and type "ipconfig" (no quotes) in the black box what do you get ?

Is there an IP address ?
Is there a subnet mask ?
    Is there a gateway ?

If so or something else which requires Internet works (say email) then perhaps the browser connections are upset

Tools, internet options, connections in IE8.

For a WiFi connection at home I would expect to see nothing ticked in LAN connections.

    Hope this helps.

I did a PING test yesterday and I got all 4 packets back and I did get an I.P. address although I can't remember what it is now. I haven't tried other email apps on my OH's PC as she doesn't use Outlook (can't get into hotmail because of ther problems being experienced) but I have been able to update the antivirus OK so i am assuming the internet connection is OK ?

Also, nothing ticked in the Lan settings.
