I take exception to that. Because I am far less academically qualified than you, and was told by Tesco that I'm over qualified to work there at shop floor level.:www: Progress Report :www:

I am with J i m I am afraid. Surely you have to be able to read and write and add up. Many people cannot. Does that mean they would stand as good a chance of getting a job in Tesco's as someone who had some sort of qualification showing that they could read and write and add up?
By the way, filling in the application form is no test on whether you can read and write as that could be done by a friend.0 -

im surprised at that as i thoguht they did ask for qualifications,0 -
Even if they don't ask for your qualifications, when they interview you and ask about your work history etc, I'm sure they'll get a fair idea of how qualified you are.0

I do agree with you on the stacking shelves comments, this is a lot of people's answers or get a job in a fast food place
and it really doesn't help.
Whilst you don't think that you are above doing something like that, (although there are some)it does actually make it harder
to get back into what you did do beforehand.
There are jobs out there though but employers are being too selective they want people to have done everything which they are
unlikely to get and will have to train people in certain areas. I have had this with roles I have applied for, they want
knowledge of a certain system and not prepared to train. Not surprisingly they are still advertising.
Agencies are also not helping people as much as they can, they are picking people with degrees in this that and the other,
rather than giving other people the chance to prove they can do it by not even submitting their CV to their client.
The other thing that I am finding which is really annyoing is when you go for a job interview and then after a number of
weeks you get - you did a really good interview but we had an internal applicant and we gave it to them.
I think for graduates it is slightly easier because companies have to take on a certain amount under their graduate scheme.
I was working for a large retailer and there were more grads that perm staff in the dept!
Care home work - you need to have certain things and it's not something that people should go into lightly.
I am finding there are a lot of sales roles being advertised but unless you have sales experience they won't even consider you
even if the job description is basically admin, that and teaching posts which you have to be qualified for.0 -
I admit maybe i was one of those who said get a job stacking shelves as i thought it was easy to get into. Its quite odd really, despite having years of experience i cant get to interview at various retailers and all are jobs I could easily do with my eyes closed. I didnt realise it was this hard.0

people think that if they say 'flip burgers' or 'stack shelves' then suddenly you'll have a job... doesn't work that way at all... and as someone has mentioned before you can't put it on your CV as you'll end up not getting the job that you've trained for/want etc... I have a lot of different skills and I find that I have to have several CV's because if I entered all of them on one CV I would never get a job again... my graphics type work do not want my admin/PA jobs on there and PA/Admin do not want graphics either... and the same is with my photo industry experience (which spans most of my career) so having lots of skills is rubbish as far as employers are concerned.
I also think the people that come out with such unhelpful statements usually are the type that would never do such work nor would they 'lower' themselves to do anything they didn't want to.
I've actually been told to make my self homeless and move to a whole new section of England just because the benefits that I'm applying for are slightly lower than my rent?!?!?!?!?!? how extreme and stupid is that!
unfortunately, stupid people tend to be the most vocal!
people on forums are so rude nowadays... luckily there are a few decent people still around but boy do you have to sort through a lot of rubbish!!!

Recently applied to ASDA for a a temporary position. The I received the following yesterday the whole process was handled on-line and at no time did I attend or see anybody:-
"Thanks very much for attending our recent Asda Magic assessment centre and interview to join our team here at Asda. We were very impressed with your skills and attitude and the great news is that we’d really like to offer you a position.
The not so great news is that unfortunately at the moment we don’t have any vacancies available that match your skills and requirements.
All is not lost though – and we hope you’ll bear with us. For the next 6 months, we will keep your details on our system and as soon as a suitable position comes up we’ll contact you directly to discuss it. As you have already attended a Magic assessment centre and been through the interview process, you won’t need to go through this again, we’ll just invite you into the store for a quick chat about the role. Rest assured you’re right at the front of the queue when a new vacancy does come up.
We’re sorry that we haven’t got something for you straight away. Thank you for your interest in Asda – we do hope to speak with you soon. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact us on "
Managing expectations eh!
In other words, they will contact you before the busy Christmas period.
Good ploy by ASDA as all of the recruitment formalities have been completed and you (if you decide to) can hit the ground running.
Makes sense for the company - not very good for any prospective employee.0
