It probably is the cheapest it gets, but Talk Talk are a horrible company to deal with if anything goes wrong. Personally, I'd never recommend TT to anyone on the basis of their poor customer service.

iPlayer and the others (particularly with HD programmes on the iPlayer) absolutely hoover up download allowances - the BT Spring offer I think was 10gb - absolutely useless.

BT are consistently regarded in Which? customer surveys as bad value for money... nothing changes.

10Gb isn't useless, not for people who only use the internet to browse and check email.

If you use iPlayer, play games, download music and films then it goes without saying that an unlimited package would be better for you.

Yep, first thing I thought was turn the router off when you're not using it.

Not a good thing to do. every time you switch of the router the exchange will treat it as a disconnection and will reduce the speed to stabilize the line

Only in the first 10 days of DLM. After that you can switch it on and off as much as you want.

I'm always swapping between my Sagem Sky router and my Netgear Sky router when I work from home because my work laptop doesn't like staying connected to the Sagem.

I haven't experienced any slow down of speed.

I thought TalkTalk's limit of 40GB was a bit stingey when I transferred from an older AOL contract in 2006 or thereabouts to their "free" broadband.

You can upgrade to an 80GB download limit for another fiver per month at TalkTalk.

Never been warned that my 40GB has been exceeded even though I use iPlayer sometimes and watch Sony Entertainment occasionally. But thanks for the heads up - there's always a first time :p

I turn my router off every night so it's only on for about 4 or 5 hours a day and there is no reduction in speeds.
  • Oh my word thanks for all the replies!

I thought it over and despite my severe reservations of the usage figures that BT were saying we used, we upgraded to unlimited. Thought that would be end of it but oh no!!!!

As mentioned we live in the middle of nowhere so rely on our land line as we have no mobile signal. Today I phoned my partner on his mobile and he asked where I was phoning from as the number wasn't our home number !!!!!!!!!!!!!

After phoning BT and getting a poor Indian call handler again, she finally declared triumphantly that we have a "crossed line" !

Don't even ask how long it took to explain that we were calling from our home telephone "But that is not the number that is registered to you" repeat Ad nauseam for an hour.

Ok no problem we should get that fixed in 3 days!!!

So now I triply don't believe those downloads are correct, 4Gb when no one was in the house until about 9pm?????

I have been back with BT for 2 weeks after staying away from them for 8years !!!!!! was I thinking going back to them???

Can I cancel the contract, as it is I'm going to contact OFCOM (who're crap as well)

Their solution is to forward our calls to my husband's mobile, that's helpful we don't have a signal. No apologies no compensation.

I HATE BT I just feel so powerless.......
  • Unless you can get cable, which you can't, you're at the mercy of (at least some of) the BT infrastructure regardless of who you pick to go with. But you can choose to deal with a provider based in the UK who is competent at sorting out any problems which arise.

However you can't cancel the contract on the basis of the crossed line, no. But, try downloading the TBB meter tool from www.thinkbroadband.com to keep an eye on your usage and cross check it with what BT claim. I wouldn't have thought it likely that the crossed line and the excessive data usage are related to each other, but you could monitor your usage from now going forward to give you an idea of what you really use and highlight any issues.
