BT say we're downloading 1GB a day!!!!!!

Just changed from Sky to BT Broadband and within a week we have reached our 10Gb limit!!! With Sky we were lucky to use 10Gb a month.
We have phoned to ask what on earth is going on, and they have listed the high usage days, which include days we were not even in the house and laptop not in the house either!!!!!
No we haven't given our key to anyone...we live in the middle of nowhere with a farm about a mile away.
BT not interested! We've been on the phone to an Indian call centre for over an hour who have passed to another Indian based call centre who just say download some software to see your usage! They have a script and they can't deviate from it, which is sooo frustrating.
We know our usage when we're not even in the house!!!! We were with Sky 3 years and only once went over our limit.
Is this just a big con to get us to upgrade??? Not sure what to do!!!
How can you prove you're not downloading???

Turn the router off when you leave the house. Change the password. You can't really prove it but try checking the router stats it'll tell hw much much has been uploaded and downloaded. BT counts both where Sky doesn't. So you might be uploading near to 700Mb but downloading only 300Mb a day. Have you checked for torrent software? Disable everything.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Yep, first thing I thought was turn the router off when you're not using it.0

Oh WOW HappyMJ thanks for quick response! Have calmed down a bit! Good idea switching router off, have torrents etc but are disabled.
Didn't realise BT counted uploads as well!!! Just realised have got a new iPad and have a guilty feeling creeping up.....:embarasse
Maybe just maybe it WAS me afterall.....0 -
10GB isn't much of a limit is it? I thought TalkTalk's limit of 40GB was a bit stingey when I transferred from an older AOL contract in 2006 or thereabouts to their "free" broadband.
I guess that is another reason why BT can't tempt me back even though I wish they would!0 -
BT have a 40Gb package and an unlimited package too. Depends what you can afford.0

10gb is an absolutely pathetic download limit in this day and age! My mate got cold called by BT and the eejit signed up on the spot. His deal includes 10gb monthly download limit and he has 3 teenage girls and 4 laptops in the house!! I've told him he must be off his head to agree to the deal but he knows best. He's only just gone 'live' so I'm expecting an anguished phone call sometime next week
BT charge £5 per 5gb that you go over your limit. 0 -
Do you listen the radio on it?
We have a bt unlimited line (but have had 3 warnings in 5 years).
Got a separate work line 2 months ago with 10gb on- justvfor emails- actually really only needed phone line. Didn't think as I tend to listen to radio via Internet- got a warning after 6 days that I had exceeded. Surprised- just swapped radio laptop back onto unlimited one.June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving
July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550
October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000 -
When I was still living at home, at an attempt to save some money, my parents downgraded our unlimited Internet to 1GB per month. My sister and I were regular Internet users, so you can imagine how livid we were. We tried our best to stay within the limit, but 1GB is absolutely eff all, and ironically our monthly Internet bill was more than we were paying on unlimited!MillicentBystander wrote: »10gb is an absolutely pathetic download limit in this day and age! OP-definitely install Netmeter or some other monitoring software to check your actual usage ...because there were reports that BT usage stats. were wildly overestimating usage - don't THINK its been sorted yet.

The TalkTalk deal I'm on gives me the line rental, broadband, free evening/weekend calls (but not 084, 087) and free anytime international to 36 countries for about £18.50pm I think. Isn't that as cheap as it gets? They recently wrote to me too, offering half-price for 3 months if I sign a new 18 month contract (I won't).Gordon_Hose wrote: »BT have a 40Gb package and an unlimited package too.
