Anamish, why are you so against claiming benefits ?. Are you so stupid as to not realize that your stamp is no longer being paid. This in turn could lead to a short-fall in your state pension.

You earned money and paid taxes, you are entitled to claim benefits. Would you rather you and your little girl end-up homeless just because you are 'to proud' to go and sign-on.

When I got laid-off, the first thing I did upon leaving the factory was to go home and phone the Jobcentre.

    Hi Moomin

I am in exactly the same situation as you. I have my job, it is mega stressful, the enviroment is toxic, there is no support, and I have been considering quitting with nothing to go to, a I feel if i stay in this job, then a heart attack or a stroke is just around the corner.

My job is supposed to be is nine hours a day with no lunchbreak ever. It is 9 hours of non stop pressure, with one problem mounting on top of another for the entire time, the phones ringing the entire time, customers coming in etc while the admin staff ignore the phones/customers, by pretending they cannot see them - and resent doing their own jobs, nevermind supporting me. And yes, I have complained about this, to my boss, my boss's boss and the bloke above him. But nothing changes.

I am sitting here at 2.45am, knowing I have to be up at 5am, but cannot sleep because of it all. I have been in floods of tears recently, even breaking down at work.

I really need to go to the doctors to get me through this.

I have been jobsearching like mad for at least three months, with no comebacks.

It seems these days you are stuck, with little hope.

I feel for you, I'm in a similar position. I was so happy to get my job at the beginning of May. However, the boss turned out to be a tyrant!

The person who had the job before me is taking the company to a tribunal. I hope she wins!

I have always worked in office admin. While I was out of work after we moved to a new area, because of my husband's job, I worked voluntarily in a local charity shop. I have decided that I like shop work and have been applying for retail jobs. I've had a couple of interviews, but no luck with a job yet.

I can't make my mind up whether to give up my job and go back to voluntary work in the charity shop or whether to soldier on with my current job. The experience would help and I'd be happy. I need to be earning, but we could manage for a while if I was out of work.

However, I don't like the idea of not earning and contributing to the household income.

Go to your Union and at least discuss these problems with them, and remember that your Company has a 'duty of care' to you. If you don't have a Union, join (I think) Unite as an individual, it's about £9 something a month. It helps to put you back in control as you have someone (a really 'big' brother) on your side, who can give advice.

I wouldn't ever resign, but do try to make the environment easier for yourself, don't give them reasons to get rid of you (angry and frustrated at work), and try to get some of the admin staff on your side to help with the phones (are they supposed to answer the complaints' phones?). If they are and are not, then you can complain to your boss that this is not happening (I know you have, but keep on doing it - the squeaky wheel gets the oil), and that completing your work objectives is hampered by your not being supported by the others.

As I say: get union membership (and let them know subtly, that you have this!); get union advice; the Company has a 'duty of care' to you. Change the environment, somehow!

And remember, just about everyone hates their job, you're not the only one. Sometimes you just have to stick it out and remember that things can change (your boss can leave, other people can go and nicer, more helpful, ones come in); and that every month that goes by we are closer to better times.

Train for something else if you can, and get a hobby that will play to your strengths.

Hopefully the economy will improve in a few years and jobs will gradually become more available. Try to stay positive, if you can.

Do feel so much for you - also hated my job - but would not recommend leaving without something else.

Good luck! Hope you can change things around.

Just seen a job I'd love! In the middle of filling out the torturous (is that how you spell it?) online application form.

Try to stay positive and keep on trying.

Good luck to all of you in the same situation :)

Oh well - can't prevaricate any longer - back to form filling

I've managed to get an interview for this Friday. Trouble is, it is through the same agency that already has me on secondment elsewhere. My agency controller is not a happy bunny with the prospect of losing me to another colleague in another office.
I've already had an email from her to which I replied that is all about the money and the potential new employer is paying at least £2k more.

My current role is high-pressure, but my attitude is that I will stop for lunch and resume the task in hand afterwards. Nothing is that important.

I completely understand how the OP feels. I have been in my job just under 2 years. I am the sole wage earner in our family and we are just keeping our heads above water financially. I used to love the job until one of my 2 colleagues left to move to london and the boss employed a friend of his to do the job. At the time I was doing the job of the office manager but was on the lowest pay. I was promised a hefty bonus which never happened. My wages were eventually raised so that all 3 of us were on the same wage. After almost 18 months of doing the job of the office manager, the boss has made his mate the official office manager and given him a £5K pay rise!!!! When I found this out I was very disheartened. The bosses "mate" is a pure nightmare to work with and seems to be using fear management to get things done. My workload is still the same as he does not want to take on the managerial aspects of my workload. He only works when the boss is in the office and berates me and my other colleague for the least little thing. Last time I got shouted at for having a different view than his! I have even been called at home (on the first day of my holiday) to be told just how stupid I was because something had happened that was outwith my control.

People have even spoken to my boss about this (nothing to do with me and my other colleague). He said he would keep an eye on things but as he is very rarely in the office and his "mate" is always at his house having his tea made for him, I can't see there being any improvements. Both me and my other colleague are actively looking for another job and the boss knows I am looking for another job because my OH told him!

I used to love coming in to work every day but now I absolutely dread getting up in the morning. We have also had our holidays cut by 5 days a year as the boss felt that we should take the cut to benefit the "business". I would love to leave and get another job but I earn £21K a year and all the jobs that are the same as what I do are being offered at around £8K less than I earn which would leave us in a seriously dire position.

So I can completely sympathise with you OP, I hope you find a job soon. Good luck.

Today I left the job I hated. It was making me very ill, with stress, anxiety and depression.
I broke down and resigned the next day. I was allowed an early leave date (today).

I am 29 with no major commitments and dream of travel and improving my language skills. I am looking for ways to work abroad and travel (on a budget) and progress my Spanish. I have very little savings so maybe working holiday or jobs abroad may be the best bet of travelling without going broke. I am also signing up for some temp work in London while I plan more adventures.

Life is very uncertain but I don't believe any job is worth sacrificing your health for, especially if you get to the point where you would rather die than go to work.

If you'd rather be unemployed for a bit (no one can say how long these days) than work , then that's when you should quit. If you'd rather die than go to work then you should definitely quit! Moomin sounds like you've done the best thing for you, good luck hope it all works out.
  • well I wouldn't say unemployment is the more attractive option, but hopefully I will find some other work soon ;)

Only have 2K saved so will need work asap to fund my travels!
