Quitting job

I am currently in a job I can't stand, it is making me ill with stress and depression. I really want to quit even without another job lined up. Am i mad to do this? Is there really no work around, even temp work?
I have looked for other jobs but I don't get any replies. I live in London. Right now I want to save my health foremost. I have £5K saved to live off while I look.

There's your answer! There are jobs available but certainly less than a couple of years ago. There are also a LOT of people chasing these jobs so actually securing one is even harder. You could potentially be unemployed for months - or even years. How long will your £5K realistically last? Then if you have to claim benefits how much will you be entitled to? Is it enough? Have you any debt? If you do choose to leave your job, what reason are you going to give a new potential employer?
Whilst I appreciate you are unhappy in your job, I would strongly advise against leaving without another job to go to in this climate. It is far easier to get a job when you already have a job. See you Doctor about your stress, perhaps learn some techniques for dealing with stress.
To be honest, it is easy to be dramatic and say that your job is causing stress and depression; I don't doubt you loathe your job but would you loathe being unemployed and on the breadline more? How would you feel about not having the money to buy some new shoes or a haircut? How depressed would you be at having to stay in night after night? Not being able to go to the cinema, buy the new bestseller? All things to be considered before giving up your job.0 -
practically it's hard to find a job now a days. It's even harder to find a work were you really can enjoy at the same time having a good environment. Maybe you can change your mood in your current work by making new friends that can spice up your day. Since when you are working together with friends makes the working environment different and much more fun also.
What you said that the work is making you ill? I wonder how you are doing lately in your work. Are you getting productive since this kind of feeling can really affect ones performance on duty.
If I were you I would stick to were I am working at he moment and hopefully get another work to transfer. By doing this you can set aside and save that extra money you have saved up.
hope this helps.don't invest on something non profitable.

What is the job OP0

I'm so sorry you hate your job - I've been there and it's so hard to keep going. However, I've also seen the other side of leaving a job and now being able to find anything else for over a year. By that stage, you feel forced to take anything just to make ends meet and this in itself means you either sell yourself short (I took a £12K pay cut to get the job) or potentially ruin your career as you'll be asked later why you took this job. It is so much better looking for a job whilst having one so I know this isn't what you want to hear, but my advice is to keep going.
With your current job, is there anything you can do to make the job better? can you move elsewhere within the organisation? perhaps the mindset could be 'well, I just come in, do my hours, and forget about it when I leave the office'.
Trust me when I say the stress you may feel now will be miniscule to the stress you'd feel if you left and didn't find anything for a long time.0 -

First of all I would suggest you see your doctor. If you really are suffering from depression (as opposed to just "fed up"!) then there is a lot they can do to help. There is however no quick fix.
If work really is the main cause then the doctor will probably offer to put you off sick. Think carefully about this. Under some circumstances it can be a great help to get away from the place for a few weeks but it can also give rise to other problems. However, it can be hard to go back.
It shouldn't, but quite a lot would depend on how your firm would respond to a medium to long period of sickness absence. Will you get paid (apart from SSP)? Will they try to aggressively "manage" your sick leave or will they take a far more laid back approach?
If you really are on the point of quitting without something else lined up then you could argue there is nothing to lose by taking a few weeks off (obviously if your doctor agrees) and then review the situation.0 -
Hi all,
I don't want to sound ungrateful, I know there would be hundreds of people who might gladly take my job. However I have been in this job for 2 years and feel hopeless as though my wellbeing is declining. I want fulfilling work, so I have booked a career/life coach to help me work out an action plan.
I work in University Admin. It pays quite well and is stable but I just don't enjoy the job and environment. I am more creative and need to do something with that, hopefully I won't end up a starving writer/artist.
I've got back in touch with all the old recruitment agencies I used to use and it is DEAD quiet. I can see a lot of jobs advertised but I imagine there is a lot more competition now for jobs.
I will see my doctor and take it from there.Achievements:

I was in your situation a couple of months ago, although I moved from my home town as well.
Now I'm suffering from depression with no job, run out of money and I don't think it could get any worse. Stick with it but spend plenty of time re-doing your CV and job searching.Trying to spread calmness, understanding and optimism on MSE0 -
Better to be in a job while looking than not.
Best advice is to seek help from your doctor and try to seek alternative employment than to just throw in the towel by signing on. That money you have saved will go in no time.0 -
Agree with other replies, take positive steps to look for a new job, and I would expect that would help you cope with your current situation.0
