I am currently in a job I can't stand, it is making me ill with stress and depression. I really want to quit even without another job lined up. Am i mad to do this? Is there really no work around, even temp work?

I have looked for other jobs but I don't get any replies. I live in London. Right now I want to save my health foremost. I have £5K saved to live off while I look.

I was in the same boat...had worked for many years in a company..was happy with the job, but not at all happy with the working atmosphere...would get nightmares when i sleep...after 6 years took a voluntary redundancy...in may 2010...thought nothing would be worser...thought i was qualified, talented and experienced and should be able to get a job in a few months....how wrong was i.....still unemployed.....went to interviews, just to be rejected....now without money....cannot afford to buy my child a chocolate....i am against claiming any JSA or any benefits...and so here i am...wishing i never complained about the job that I had and the money that I used to get....

pls pls do not do that....find urself another job..u r more confident when u hv one and is easier to attend interviews...

    Hi all,

I don't want to sound ungrateful, I know there would be hundreds of people who might gladly take my job. However I have been in this job for 2 years and feel hopeless as though my wellbeing is declining. I want fulfilling work, so I have booked a career/life coach to help me work out an action plan.

I work in University Admin. It pays quite well and is stable but I just don't enjoy the job and environment. I am more creative and need to do something with that, hopefully I won't end up a starving writer/artist.

I've got back in touch with all the old recruitment agencies I used to use and it is DEAD quiet. I can see a lot of jobs advertised but I imagine there is a lot more competition now for jobs.

I will see my doctor and take it from there.

sometimes people prefer to stay in the work they have at the moment because they enjoy with the kind of community they have. The relationship that they bond with there workmates is somewhat important to the work they are doing daily. This what makes others separate from careers to work relationships.

And to me I would also love to stay working with my fellow workmates especially batch mates whom you applied and got hired all at the same time. But just like they say life goes on and others move on as well when the call is urgent. You lose some work or friends and ahead you find some alternative things that you have lost in the past.
don't invest on something non profitable.

On the other side of the coin, I did this recently. I budgeted about £6K for about 4-5 months off work. I wanted a break. I put in three months notice. In my second last week of my notice, I had an interview. On my second day of not working, I had a second interview and was offered the job. THey delayed the start date which suited me as I wanted a break - but I had security of having secured a job, so I could live on £1500 a month for the four months off. I've had several holidays and mini breaks, caught up on my OU studies, with excellent marks, and now working again in a fantastic job/company at a good wage.

OP, it will depend on your skills and experience, there will be a lot of people chasing jobs, so it will be down to how confident you feel you are. You won't get any benefits, but you could sign on straight away, although you will be sanctioned. If you have not looked around that much at the job market, then don't do it. Equally, if you dont like what you do, what if you dont like the next place.....? It's a risk too.

maybe you could use your savings to retrain in your spare time but dont leave your job before you have a definate other one

i hate my job too at the moment and ive spent the last two days, rebuilding my cv and registering and uploading it at about fifteen different job sites, ive applied for about ten jobs and im waiting for an employer to call me back because i missed his call yesterday, something will come along soon, stay positive ;)

im thinking of retraining also, im going to get some life guard training and possible child care qualifications which i dropped out of at college, i think id be alot better at it now im older

    Hi all
I have remained in my job as it is seemingly impossible to get an interview let alone another offer.
I loathe it but using it to save for a flat and further travels.
Those of you looking for another job how are you getting on?

I've not had a full time job since September 2009. Working part time (30 hours including travel-self employed) at the moment earning a whopping £35 a week profit plus tax credits and benefits. It's a lot less stressful but no money for treats.

Edit: Just like to add I also had £5,000 when I finished in 2009 and amazingly I still have that money. It took a radical change to my expenses. i.e not going out every night (now just 2 or 3 nights a week) and looking for every possible penny to be saved on sites like this one but my expenses have come right down and I haven't spent any of the savings.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Hi moomin82

I've been unemployed since Tuesday, I had gone from a secure job working in a company to another company that offered me progression and then out of the blue I was terminated. It took me over a year to find a job I wanted to leave for and didn't want to leave the company without a new job in place. The situation now is that I have registered with agencies and do have possible interviews lined up, however I have been advised by those agencies that this time of the year is exceptionally tough to find employment due to grads entering into the work place with not enough jobs to go around. I would take one of the other posters advice and use the savings to retrain whilst in employment and make the switch when you have somewhere to go to. Good luck x

I rewrite my CV all the time, do you get any interviews? 2009 - That's when I noticed work really drying up then - redundancy, took a number of low paid temp jobs and then I took an interim job to get by on. 2 years later i am still in this job and it was lower status than my last one, now recruiters tell me they can't recommend me for the higher jobs as I have not been doing them for the last 2 years. Catch 22. But my current job funds things i love which are dancing and other creative things (writing etc), I would love to be paid to do what I love, I know it is possible but I haven't been able to translate my passions into paid work yet.

  • My job was making me ill, I was stressed and very unhappy for a long time.I wish that I had left before I ended up getting dismissed.I now have no money but mentally I am a lot happier. It depends on how much you hate it.If I was offerred £100,000 I would not go back to where I previously worked.
If you can bear it then I would stick it out whilst trying t get something elce.If its making you ill, like properly ill then I would give my notice. You can always get a cheap haircut from a training college etc.

I was under the impression that I was fine in my job...until a string of comments basically led me to flip and hand my notice in. I've since swayed between thinking it was the bravest and stupidist thing I've ever done. I applied for 50 or so jobs in about three days...had my first interview yesterday, got the job (part time, 20hrs) and have another interview for another part time job in two weeks. The jobs are out there, but I feel I've been incredibly lucky to get one that will follow on from my notice period.

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up; always try just one more time
