    thanks asharon an Mikeyorks :D

I've just read on my P45 from my last employer that if I'm claiming Jobseekers Allowance (which I am), I need to take the P45 to the Benefit Office (Job Centre I presume?) and see about getting a tx refund. I'll be going there on Tuesday (to sign on), so I'll ask about it then.

    Thanks for your help! :D

    Hi guys

What is the set amount of days you have to be out withni the Uk to claim back you tax? is it something like 183 days?

I am planning on being out the country so i can claim back my tax so will be keeping all boarding tickets etc to help. Is there anything else i should keep or do?

I also work for a company that pays my tax and NI anyway but wanted to know if i was able to claim back my travel expensies etc at the end of the year aswell with a tax return?

Can anyone tell me how i would go about from paying tax in Spain as thats where will be spending most of my time?

    Any help would be great.

The tax refund company are so rubbish that when I used them a few years ago( before I discovered this site) the Inland Revenue sent the cheque straight to me by mistake, so I never had to pay the company anything! Also my tax code never changed so I applied myself this year and it has been backdated for 6 years!

In March 2005 i was made redundant and out of work for 3 months (during which time i did not claim jobseekers allowance). Is it likely i would have been taxed too much when starting my new job?

Unlikely, because before starting the new job you would have had no prior earnings int hat tax year, and hopefully be on a cumulative tax code, and therefore receive all of the allowances that are due to you.

You may however be due a refund from the period your old job ended up to the end of the tax year.
  • My wife was approached by the Tax Refund Company through her teaching union sometime ago, and agreed to start a claim.

I recently caught wind of what was happening when she received a letter from them asking for her P60. I initially assumed it was a con, and decided to check them out on the net. Low-and-behold I found this thread.

So far they've only been sent (and have returned) one of my wife's payslips. In light of my findings, she recently sent them a letter asking for the claims process to be terminated immediately. They've now replied in an aggressive tone, strongly suggesting she must continue.

Is this likely to be just scaremongering? Although their letter is a bit harsh, they've not actually threatened any recourse if she does not continue the claim, and I am just wondering if they are hoping the tone itself would put the wind up her and convince her to carry on.

My wife is sure she started the claim process through a webpage, and did not sign any agreements. She is also convinced the TRC did not disclose any details of the fees involved. While she's scatty at times, I am inclined to believe that she wouldn't have signed up for this in the full knowledge that they would take 40% of the rebate.

The TRC were adamant in earlier letters that they could not proceed without the P60, so I am just wondering if we should ignore their letters and leave it at that?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, just ignore them from now on.

But don't leave it at that. Your wife should write to her tax office to say that she does not want the Tax Refund Company to acto on her behalf, and withdraws any previous authority that may have been given allowing them to do so.

She should also write to her teaching union .. telling them to stop advocating the services of parasitical companies. From which the union no doubt receive advertising fees.
Most teachers should have the basic acumen to deal with HMRC in their own right.
