Please don't be conned into using these people - the Inland Revenue will sort this out free of charge, and you know they're going to give accurate advice. They will ask for details of total income earned in each year (make sure you include income from every source during the year, including pensions), they'll also require total tax paid in the same period, plus details of any benefits in kind (car etc). These details are shown on your payslips and P60's.

Just ring them - they're really helpful and very approachable - and free!.

I was stupid enough to deal with them. Not only do they charge you to do what you could easily do yourself, they're incompetent. They kept asking for different pieces of information, often requesting things I'd already sent them. This went on for over a year. They finally wrote to tell me they couldn't continue with my claim because I hadn't sent them a couple of P60's I HAD sent them. I now can't get them back.

Contact the employers you worked for and ask them to provide a statement showing the details that would have been on the P45's and P60's, then send them to HMRC. Make it clear in your letter that the company previously dealing with your claim is no longer acting for you and that any repayment should be sent direct to you.

    Hello

I've got a form from "The Tax Refund Company". It says that if you fill it in, they will check if you have over paid and claim the amount on your behalf. They will then pay you 60p in the £1 of all the money they get back for you. (Eg, if they can claim back £100 for you, you will get £60).

    Their website is taxbuddies.com

60p in the £1 sounds like some kind of scam to me!

Has anyone heard of these people?

Is it worth filling in the form just to see what happens?

    Thanks

    Laura

That sounds like them stealing your watch and then asking you to pay to find out the time!

If you think youve overpaid tax, phone the Revenue helpline - and then post here like Ive done to try and understand the Revenue's advice!

These people are not qualified as Chartered Tax Advisers. The person named on their website as managing the tax refunds servivce has no qualifications at all! 40% is far too high as a fee (is it 40% plus VAT or including VAT??)

The firm as a whole has three persons with ATT qualifications, which is a relatively junior qualification, and one very recently qualified chartered accountant. They appear as a result to lack the 'gravitas' that comes with experience.

I would not choose them to deal with my tax or finances.

If you need advice that is straightforward then HMRC are happy to help.

If your life is more complex then I'd suggest you choose a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.

Thank you Mr County. That couldn't be clearer. Don't touch them with a barge-pole!

Hi, I've read through this thread but find it very confusing, so I wondered if anyone could help me? Last year (middle of October until the end of December) I worked at Poundland as a Xmas temp. That was my only job (no college or anything on the side!). I was 17yrs old (I turned 18 this March). I was charged £87.13 in tax the two months I worked there. I think thats far too much? I am currently unemployed (searching for a job without any luck).

    Thanks in advance :D

most likely if you earned in total under 4,000 odd you will get it all back. Write to your local IR office or whoever is mentioned in this thread and they will ask for your end of year tax form.
    Nice to save.

Hi, I've read through this thread .....etc

Laura - if that was your only income in the period 6th Apr 05 until 5th Apr 06, then it is all due back to you. You should have a P45 given to you when you finished the temp employment? Contact the tax district named on it (or write to them enclosing the P45) - explain the basic facts - and they will send you a simple claim form to complete.
If you write and explain that was your sole employment in 2005-06, they will likely not bother with a formal claim form.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
