Sometimes I wonder if Refunds Direct, The Tax Refund Company or Personal Taxation Services are posting their own threads to bring attention to themselves!! After all, this site is about money saving so anyone who is a serious moneysaver would not consider giving 40% of their refund to someone else! Beancounter... just contact your tax office giving all your information as to why you think you may be due a refund, enclose your P60`s for the years in question and sit back and wait for the whole 100% refund!

LOL You cynic you Sarahlouise. :p Good point though. Perhaps Martin should put a big message at the top of this board something like

DON'T USE ANY TAX REFUND COMPANY, YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF AND KEEP IT ALL.

  • Hi all. I'm relatively new to this site and am just soliciting some advice.

I have been contacted by a company called the Tax refund Company who have offered to look into my tax for the past 5 years or so. They would claim 40% of any tax overpayment that may be due to me. My tax codes have always been quite high (K416 for the 05/06 financial year). However I am finishing work at the end of March and wondered whether it's a good time to get some professional review of my tax situation. Has anyone ever dealt with them or know if this is reasonable service?

    Thanks

You do exactly the same yourself, for free, by contacting HMRC with all your details and asking them to check your tax.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Like CIS said, do it yourself. The tax refund company will not do anything that you can't do yourself.

There is always plenty of help and advice on here for free.

Hi, I was just about to ask about this - what details would I need to send, just my address, employer and NI number or anything else? Last tax year (2004/5) I worked approx 6 months total, but was, I think, taxed as though I was working the whole year, so I think I was probably overtaxed. Should I just write to the local Tax Office type chaps?

They also gave me the impression that I had overpaid my tax - My mum looked at it (She's in the trade) and told me that I had actually underpaid for the period I was querying
Lucky I didn't contact HMRC about it eh? I can't see the tax refund company stumping up 40% of my tax underpayment, can you?

  • Call your local IR office, look on Inland Revenue's website for details. They will send you out a form to complete and then look into your tax records for you, then send you a cheque, takes a couple of months.

I got a £933 rebate last year, happy days!

Avoid The Tax Refund Company, its a swizz.

I was stupid enough to deal with them. Not only do they charge you to do what you could easily do yourself, they're incompetent. They kept asking for different pieces of information, often requesting things I'd already sent them. This went on for over a year. They finally wrote to tell me they couldn't continue with my claim because I hadn't sent them a couple of P60's I HAD sent them. I now can't get them back.
