  • I hope someone can help me with this. Is is correct that that i can't get a lumpsum tax refund anymore. Someone at work as said that the rules have changed and they will just amend my tax code. I was made redundant in March went back to work in October and since then i have been on BR Code. I didn't mind this knowing that i could get a lump sum refund (somewhere around £1000) back if i asked at the end of the tax year.

Can I still get a lump sum or will it be an adjustment to a higher tax code?
    I'm Ever hopeful!

    Yes (to the lump sum).

HMRC now tend to inflate Code Numbers if you're claiming multiple years of relatively small allowances ..... as overall it's most cost efficient (to them).

In the circumstances you describe it woud be a refund ..... but much more sensible to get the BR resolved prior to the end March payslip. That will be a lump sum via your pay ..... much more sensible than waiting months for HMRC in the chaos following 6th April?

  • I just had to share this cos i'm over the moon :D

I just claimed back over £1000 after i found out i was being penalised for a company car i wasn't in receipt of. My tax code is fixed and i have a nice little packet to help pay off a loan with. Best thing was it only took three weeks to come through (bro who used to work for HMRC said "huh, good luck getting that back it'll take about 8 months").
    House deposit fund:

Total for June: £5745.44 (57% of 2013 target) (48% of total target)
    Target for December 2013: £10,000
    Total Target: £12,000

answer questions and see if u are owed money

But before you pay anybody check the tax deducted from your building society interest and ask for a refund.
Financial institutions deduct 20% tax from all of your interest. The tax is only 10% on the first £2,560.
Just phone your tax office and ask for a Form R40 (Tax Refund).

People who submit tax returns get the refund as part of their calculation.
The Tax Office told my wife that she could stop submitting turns but did not warn her to claim a refund of tax deducted at source from her savings interest.

The 10% savings band is only for those whose income is less than the personal allowance plus the 10% savings band.

Sorry that I missed out that limitation. I was focussing on pensioners as the British Legion sent out leaflets to us.

Sadly neither the building societies nor HMI ever remind savers about this concession to those of us on a small income.

Perhaps a note could be added to the text of our Tax Calculator. Obviously it cannot adjust for this but it might warn a few people.
  • quick question, i am a tax novice who is learning the hard way. i have just had a lightbulb moment and found out that i have been on the wrong tax code for a few years (i know i've been stupid). i have now rang my tax office and dealt with it. my question is how long back can these claims go?? some people have told me they can only go back 6 years and our h.r and payroll have told me that in some circumstances they will go back further. which is right?? please help the dunce! :embarasse
