The NOTW will be no more and Martin will carry on as before: helping thousands of people with his site, he's done a good job and maybe a bit less hate and a bit more "niceness" would be the order of the day please
Not denying that Martin and his site have done a heck of a lot of good for many people (myself included) My criticism of Martin here is about his stance with respect to NOTW and his position there.
I do genuinely appreciate what Martin has done in the past with MSE and financial education but feel he's dropped the ball seriously on this issue... on balance however he's been a force for good in this world so far so maybe he can take a lesson from all the response on here. I hope he continues to help people. I guess this last 2 days will have placed him under strain and a horrible dilemma.
In a wider context I am pleased that at least one outlet for the toxic journalism and methods promulgated by the Murdoch press is gone (although I do feel for the people who have no control over this issues surrounding this will be losing their jobs - I do acknowledge that there are people working there for who this will be awful news).
I acknowledge that my previous post was perhaps too gloating and I'm sorry about that.
I think there's also a wider topic for discussion (not on this thread I would suggest) about the why's and wherefores that lead the tabloids in general to stoop to activities such as the NOTW was guilty of... i.e. lots of people still buy these papers and thereby encourage it.
I doubt the Sun will go - but we as a country need to examine the power of the press and potential for undue influence in the halls of power - surely it would be better for all if there was a limit to how much of the media one person/interest group can control? - again thats a wider issue - I'll do some thinking on the subject and start a thread elsewhere0 -
I wonder what _will_ fill the void on Sundays. I can't see NI leaving the field open to the Sunday Mirror. But equally I can't see the public falling for it if they bring out their own replacement.
As bad, and sickening, as what has already been revealed is, I can't help but wonder what else there is to come out. It would have to be, in my opinion, something gigantic for this to have happened.0 -

Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I couldn't agree more with all your points. It was an error of judgement and we should move on.0 -

James Murdoch obviously has the facts as he handed over documents containing approx 4000 names of possible victims. Murdoch should be accountable and Rebecca Brookes should have been sacked immediately rather than closing a paper with hundreds of employees.0 -

As usual it will be the little people that suffer, those at the top remain untouched and wash their hands0 -
And Mr Murdoch shows his respect for the UK media by closing a paper with 130 years of history and around 40% of all Sunday newspaper sold when those involved have already left or been fired. Not the sort of organisation that I want to see increasing its role in UK media.
Meanwhile the editor at the time things actually happened keeps her job and continues to lead the News International investigation into what happened. Guess it's easier to close a newspaper with a long tradition than remove some individuals.0 -
Martin you made a serious error of judgement here.
You tried to dress up your reasons for carrying on with NOTW, whilst the British Legion, Aldi etc pulled out, you kept in there.
Now even NOTW does not think it should continue.
Given this new development, can you reflect on your decision to carry on? Even NOTW does not want you as its going.
I think you took a big hit today Martin and went down in a lot of peoples opinion.
Shame on you.
D70How about no longer being masochistic?
How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?0 -
I know that NotW is going, so your column isn't relevant anymore. But yesterday, Martin, you won a court case and the judge pointed out
Mr Lewis scored a legal victory at London's High Court on Wednesday when a judge ruled the mark was "distinctive to the claimant".
The judge said the evidence showed that CCL "was riding on the coat tails of the claimant's registered mark and benefiting from its power of attraction, its reputation and its prestige".
Mr Lewis recently topped The Grocer magazine's annual Power 100 list and the title of "most powerful person on the high street". His website has five million followers and he was praised for offering advice, helping shoppers avoid rip-offs and getting the best deals.
Thats you, that is. The reputation and the prestige. Five million followers here (whats the NotW circulation like??) You are the most powerful person on the high-street. Thats some clout. You aren't just a someone with a column anymore. You are far more than that. So is MSE and the whole "brand".0 -
