My favourite is one which retrieves things from under the cooker, undoes screws, loosens jar lids, gets nails and drawing pins out, tucks carpet back under the gripper where the cat pulled it up trying to get out, scrapes mud from shoes and has a hundred and one other uses. It has it's own special storage space in the kitchen drawer and has been in the family for more years than I care to remember My DD now has one of her own and DS will have one before long as he sets up home.
It's blade is long, dull and rusty, the handle is cracked and pitted, but I wouldn't be without it for anything. We call it The Knife0 -

my potato ricer! Non essential to my being, but makes my mash SOOOOO much fluffier than a normal masher!
Also my pencil sharpener style thingy that makes pretty rose things out of carrots and cucumbers! (sad I know!)
Its a commercial kitchen, but trust me out of 100s of knives there is only ONE that everyone wants, its an old one handed down through generations, and is known only as THE knife! It cuts anything much better than all my new shiny chef endorsed ones!
OOOOooooOOOOOoo noo how could I forget! My mincer / sausage maker! None essential, but helps use up all sorts of stuff! Throw it in the mincer and chuck it in a sausage!
Oki will stop now as I am systyematically going through my kitchen in my head, thinking of all the "non essentials" and justifying them as to why they are in fact essential to me!
JexI will pay jexygirl the compliment of saying that she invariably writes a lot of sense!0 -
I love (no, I really mean love:smileyhea) my Kenwood Chef! It was my Mum's and dates from the late 60s. It's such a kitchen icon to my as Mum made all our bread and cakes using this when I was little.
I can be found stroking it gently on a regular basis, much to DDs consternation!!

For me - it's my cheese slicer. I know I can slice cheese with a knife, but it's so much easier with the slicer and the slices are the same depth each time, handy for cheese toasties.0
