Panini press?...mine cost around 25 quid...you can do paninis, ciabattas, toasted sandwiches and open melts on them...i love mine....so quick and easy. Also a breadmaker...its come in really handy since the village shop hasnt had any bread in because of panic buying because of the snow.you can do cakes and jam in mine too.

I personally wouldn't bother with a panini press, I just do them in the George Foreman grill! A bread maker is a good idea if you're going to use it.

My personal must-have gadgets for the kitchen are: bread maker, george foreman grill, slow cooker, microwave & electric slicer. Those are the things I would replace straight away if they broke, anything else I could probably do without.

Things in my kitchen that will have to be taken from my cold dead hands:

    1)Kettle - not strictly a gadget
    2) Coffee press
    3) Kenwood Chef - has blender and grinder/mill attachment as well
    4) Food processor
    5) Microwave rice steaming basket
    6)Bottle opener:D

Every thing else I could live without. Although I also have a good set of knives which MrS keeps nice and sharp - also indispensible.

PS: Anyone else just see Ireland give France a good kicking???

If you're going to do a lot of baking then an electric handwhisk is a godsend;)

Stick blenders are really useful too.

Hi i blow my tostie thing up, got the wire caught between the plates and BANG! never bought another one.
As for a bread maker i would of lided one but over the las 3 weeks i have got into a routine of hand baking bread and cakes so i think i would use it a few times then it would end up on EBAY! lol
I suposse it depends on space, money and time. I dont have the money or the space for a bread maker but i can find the time to hand bake so it would be a waste of money ( that i don't have) for me to get one. Saying that if i was bought one i would be made up and i would find the space.
i bought a fresh coffee machine with mlik frother ect i have had it about 18 months and used it about 10 times so a waste of money again!

I'd been thinking of getting a slow cooker to avoid having to heat a whole electric oven to make a caserole, but have since discovered the Aris simmer mat available from Lakeland. It allows me to put my Le Creuset caserole dish onto the lowest possible gas hob simmer without the risk of meat or vegetables burning at the base of the dish when they're in direct contact with the gas flame. You simply put the simmer mat over the gas flame. It's a whole lot cheaper than heating the whole oven.
  • Primrose, is this the one you have ?

thriftlady - Yes, that's it. And there's a shin beef caserole for lunch gently simmering on it as I write ! If you get one, one thing to remember. Don't add as much liquid as you would normally do in an oven as it doesn't steam and evaporate at the same rate. (When used to do my caseroles in the electric oven I often found I had to top up the liquid because of evaporation).
