I've posted here rather than the disability and dosh forum as I know there are lots of cooks here. So what gadgets do you have you wouldn't be without and which are gathering dust?

As you've chosen to post here, I'll recommend an existing Old Style thread. If you're after adapted kitchen gadgets, D&D is the best place for you to post :T

We have an existing thread on best kitchen gadgets, which I'll merge this with so that you can have a browse :D You may also want to check out
    Unused kitchen gadgets ;)

Hi Jasper, sorry to hear about your arm.

My mother lost use of one arm and hand after sdhe had a stroke, and someone - I'll find out who - came round to her house and did an assessment, to see what she'd need. It is worth speaking to your doctor's and finding out if there are any local charities that do a similar thing.

I know that the things my mum uses most are the things I have never seen commercially, like an attachment for her kettle that makes it easier to lift with one hand, a sort of stand thing that goes over the sink so she can stand a colander in it to drain things, etc, and a guard that fits over a normal knife to make it safer to use one-handed.

Other than that she has a food processor that she uses all the time, and a stand mixer that is very useful. She also has a mini-chopper that has made things a lot easier. On the other hand the electric bread-slicer just doesn't get used. Chopping, slicing and lifting are what seems to be hardest, so I'd focus on those?

One thing she has that is brilliant is this matting from Wilkinsons, it's only about £1 but it stops things moving around on the worktop.

One of my best buys of late is a Pizza oven from the shopping channels. It cost me £10 and sits nicely on top of my microwave. Whilst good for frozen pizzas it is fab for home made pizzas. I make the dough in the breadmaker and divide the top into sections. That way the kids have what they want on their own section.
As it works of a 3amp fused plug very economical on the electricity too. I have also used it to cook pies, naan breads and other relatively flat items.

    Defo worth considering.
