Car dented in car park

Wow, three pages! Thanks for all of the input and discussion, and sorry I haven't got the time to reply to each person's input in turn.
Normally I do go and park somewhere nice and quiet like the back of a car park, as I'm not one for needing to park right on the doorstep of where I'm going (not that there's anything wrong with that). However this Travelodge car park gets very very full (if any of you know it, you'll know what I mean), so not always an option. When I parked there was no one in any of the spaces left or right for 2 or 3 spots.
As for parking over two spaces, god that winds me up...but I can see why people do it!
As for the football, then no I don't think so. Top floor of a multi-storey and never before seen that. Always a first though!
From the dent, I think it is from a door, as it seems to start from an acute angle and then spread out. From my horrendous description earlier, it seems to have hit on the styling line, and obviously the door has a hollow in it which means it has sort of caved in around this point. Interestingly there's somehow no mark on the paintwork, which is what confused me as at first I thought it was a trick of the light.
Spoke to a colleague this morning and managed to find a number on TVP website. They've said I'd need to report it as an RTA and to do so I'd have to go into a police station, preferably a TVP one as otherwise it takes longer for the paperwork to go through. Bit of a pain as I'm off elsewhere tonight, so later on after work got to drive to Slough or Windsor to find a station that's open in the evening.
All a bit of effort for as people say, something that's likely to in the end go nowhere!
As for the insurance thing, then realise if I want to pursue someone (in the unlikely event that I get access to CCTV and it covered my car and it actually has someone doing the deed) then I'll have to involve insurance. Am away from home at the moment, so haven't got all my paperwork (poor excuse I know) so couldn't do this right away.
The probable and cheaper I guess option is just to get it sorted myself. My car's booked in for a service next Friday (first free day), so I'll ask them to give me a quote for it to be pushed out. On the not reporting it to insurance point, it's an interesting one, as say I lost my temper and kicked my door in (I didn't before anyone suggests that, I wouldn't be so keen on CCTV if I had! :-D ) and then thought 'Oops' and went and got it repaired, would you need to then?0 -
TBH it sounds like it would be easier to just swallow the bitter pill lol. Even if you get CCTV your going to have to be very lucky to see the damage being caused rather than just a car parked next too.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0

Yeah, until the twit has to unload their trolley. The'll take it round the back and scrape your car in the process. They usually leave their trolley there too."fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." (Bertrand Russell)0 -

Anyone with the sense to reverse park, will know they're not going to be using the boot.
The flaw in that theory is yet again those who drive through from behind the space.
And here's what happens when people reverse out of parking spaces, there attention on what's coming and not on what their front end is doing!“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

exactly, you wouldn't tell them because there's no need to. there's even another thread somewhere, where McKneff told the poster that she needs to inform her insurance company (neighbour reversed into her and was paying cash for the repair), so she did. The girl at the insurance company said that she shouldn't have reported it, but because she had her insurance has gone up by £200.
your accident is none existent, you haven't had an accident, you just have a dent in your door that needs to be repaired.0 -

I always stick my shopping on the rear passenger seat. The boot of the Mondeo is far too big and the bags end up emptying themselves all over the place as I go up and down hills on the way home. Then 3 weeks later I'll probably find an out of date pot of yoghurt in the spare wheel well or something.
I just leave the trolley in front of the car, only time it's ever a problem is in carparks on a slope.0 -

If you report someone for instance changing number plates that you deem suspicious they will assign a crime number to it, if they check it out and its not deemed to be anything criminal it will still have a crime ref number assigned to it!!
Sorry but you are wrong. It is either civil or criminal and a crime number is not given for civil matters as there is no crime to be recorded.0 -

You will still get a crime number because its issued to every report, how can they determine if something is criminal or not until they have investigated the report!!
In this case its still criminal damage but they will still advise you to pursue for the damage yourself. Even if the police do find, catch and prosecute the person who did the damage the OP won't see a penny unless he takes it further himself.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

No you won't. Where do you get your information from?0
