try ping -t https://www.google.com
see if it keeps the link-up
You need to control C to stop it.
If the light still goes out, suggest you swap filters and phone leads is possible, until you find the source of the problem.
Have you got filters on all phones/sky if you have it?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I switched off the modem and back on for maybe up to a minute the link light was solid orange.
I typed in ping -t https://www.google.com
It listed a long list of Reply froms
So that seemed to be working
Then after a very short while the link light started to blink orange and then it started to list Destination net unreachable.
I have the extension plugged directly into the main telephone socket. No filter or adaptor or other telephone here. This extension travels upstairs then I have a microfilter here and the modem and phone plugged into the microfilter here.
I don't have Sky.
I have NTL sockets, which is who I have this dial-up with. I'll be getting rid of NTL as soon as I get this broadband working. I don't think I would need a microfilter on the NTL sockets as they are unconnected with this TalkTalk line.0 -
it's got to be worth carrying your PC downstairs and plugging straight into the master, via filter and no extension...or have you tried that?Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0

I got someone to help me carry the pc/monitor downstairs so I could plug it into the master telephone socket so no extension involved.
I pinged 192.168.1.1 and the it replied "Reply from 192.168.1.1" so that seemed to work. Then I tried to ping google and the bbc websites but these were unreachable.
Whilst doing this I noticed that most of the time the link was solid green. I believe it should be orange to indicate a connection. So several times I unplugged the power cable from the modem in order to reboot it, but the link light remained green.
I also launced IE and it downloaded a tiny section of the homepage but then just timed out.
Does it sound like there may be a problem with the modem...?0 -
Have you got a friend with b/band? You could try your modem on their line or borrow theirs. Otherwise, talktalk should be able to test your line with the your modem connected. At least you've effectively ruled out the extension so you shold be able to fault find with the PC upsatirs.
happy xmas.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -
Good to see that you have made some progress but you really need to download the manual so that you know what you are doing! The link that I gave does work and the file is only about 2MB but it is packed with useful information that will help you.
Here are the meanings of the LED's:
You should get some valuable info from the Summary page when you log-in to the 192.168.1.1 address, i.e. check the connection state, noise figures etc. and you will also be able to view the modems Logs to see what has actually happened.
I doubt if it is a problem with the modem but the filter could be the cause of your disconnection problems. If no other devices are connected to the line, the filter is actually not needed but due to the plugs being different, I doubt if you would be able to connect the modem to the line without using one.
I would try another filter. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
