I don't know - the mainstream media has regularly taken that approach when describing other groups of people.

Now you know what it feels like. Not nice, is it?

What's not nice is this comment. Grow up kid

Please don't make assumptions about my age and attempt to belittle me with the 'kid' stuff, thank you very much.

As a member of a group that has been on the receiving end of gross generalisation from our friends in the media, I think I'm perfectly entitled to my opinion.

So some journalists are upset about being tarred with the same brush as others? Forgive me if I don't rush to their defence.

However, being told to grow up by someone with the name fannyvart is quite amusing, I suppose.:rotfl:

You're not perfectly entitled to your opinion if your opinion is as gross a generalisation as you've just made. It just makes you a little pathetic.

And yes, you do need to grow up. Try being an adult and realising not everything is black and white, hey. ;)

Did you hear that whooshing sound? That was the sound of the argument going over your head while you were busy throwing more insults my way.

Journalists have been going in for the 'black and white' approach since time immemorial. Do you want me to get out a tiny violin now they're receiving the same treatment back?

My view is my view. Don't like it? Come up with an alternative.

Anyway, while I would dearly love to indulge you in an endless round of "I know you are, but what am I?" I'm a little busy to be arguing with strangers on the Internet this morning.

Don't let me stop your self-righteous indignation though, hey. ;)

The alternative to your view would be to stop generalising. You don't seem to possess the maturity to do this though, so I'll leave you alone to play with your toys now. ;)

It says 'MSE requests you give new posters a chance! Please be especally nice'.
    It works both ways.
There are ways of disagreeing with people's opinion, telling someone to 'grow up kid' is not a good way.

Welcome to MSE, by the way.

Well I strongly disagree with his absurd idea that it is ok to make gross generalisations. Perhaps I could have worded it better, but if he's going to make stupid comments like that, he should expect some verbals back.

I'll ignore him now though. Thanks for the welcome.

Erm. He didn't actually say that. What he wrote about generalisations was:

Now you know what it feels like. Not nice, is it?

That doesn't sound like someone saying it's OK. It sounds like someone observing that journalists are now receiving the treatment they used to deal out. And saying that it's not nice.

Welcome to MSE, by the way. But please bear in mind that if you're going to jump into arguments and make assumptions, don't be surprised if people call you up on it.

Erm, sorry but that's a generalisation. And you can argue with me on the point as much as you like. Saying that 'journalists are now receiving the treatment they used to deal out' is an implication of ALL journalists - and it simply isn't the case that all journalists are sods who deserve what they now seem to be getting. That's far too simplistic, and unfair to those journalists who do their job honestly and work hard.

You say not to be surprised if I get called up on how I present my arguments? Well, by the same score, don't be surprised if I call people up for making gross and rash generalisations.

Simple as that. I'll apologise for the 'kid' comment - yes that was very childish and not the way to get across my argument, but I'll stand by what I said in terms of that it WAS a generalisation, and that generalisations are wrong...so please don't tell me to 'read what was written' because I did.

    Thank you.

Sorry but it isn't. It's a simple observation. Look at the earlier posts in this very thread, where people were indeed making generalisations about journalists. Noble Savage was merely pointing out something that was happening, not making a value judgement about it. I think most of us read nothing else into it - I certainly didn't, which is why I thought your treatment of him (or her) has been unfair.
    - and it simply isn't the case that all journalists are sods who deserve what they now seem to be getting.

Please show me where I said or implied that. More to the point, please show me where Noble Savage said or implied that. He (or she) was simply making a fairly valid point that, rightly or wrongly, journalists are being tarred with the same brush.
You say not to be surprised if I get called up on how I present my arguments?

If you go round referring to people as 'kid' or 'pathetic', instructing them to 'try being an adult', or to 'grow up' for simply making observations on a public forum, then yes, I think it's right for people to challenge you. It's deeply, deeply patronising. I understand you're new to MSE; I might not have posted much myself, but I know that's not how we do things here.
Well, by the same score, don't be surprised if I call people up for making gross and rash generalisations.

For the avoidance of doubt; I haven't made gross or rash generalisations. Neither, in my mind, did Noble Savage (who, quite wisely, seems to have decided not to continue engaging with you on this).
