Poorly Jack-Liver Disease

Oh dear. When does he go back to the vet, and what's their next move with him?pulliptears wrote: »He's not had the best day today sadly
He was quiet this morning so we decided to take him for a walk around the local gardens and get him out a bit. I popped him on the back seat in his harness and just as we pulled on the car park he had streaming diarrhoea all over the back seat. Fortunately he didn't manage to cover himself in it too much but his little face fell and I think he thought he was in trouble.
We got him out, gave him some cuddles and cleaned up and then bought him back home where he has spent the rest of the day fairly quietly in his basked in the conservatory sunning himself.
I'm in two minds whether to offer a little scrambled egg with dry toast soldiers or just starve him until tomorrow now.
OH has now realised just how strong Jack is though, I passed him his lead while I cleaned up and Jack almost dragged him across the car park to the nearest tree
My father in Law is currently dog proofing his massive, flat garden for him to have a run around in tomorrow afternoon so hopefully he'll feel a bit better then.
I was hoping he'd be perked up more today, poor little fella. You must be worried sick.0 -

He's in wednesday for a bile stim test, which is basically checking is liver is functioning properly before they anesthetise him, if that comes back ok then he will go in for the exploratory OP early next week hopefully.
He's had a round of toast this evening and no return of the runs so far, he's also just had a little walk down the street and was his usual skippy self with tail wagging.
Everything I know about serious illness tells me I should be seeing a dog who's losing weight, is constantly sick or has the runs, that wont eat etc. Thats the hope we are clinging to at present.0 -
Well, if he's acting normally in between bouts of illness I'd be more than happy with that. It's encouraging to know he's not just lying there not eating or interacting with you. It does give hope that all will be well with him.pulliptears wrote: »He's in wednesday for a bile stim test, which is basically checking is liver is functioning properly before they anesthetise him, if that comes back ok then he will go in for the exploratory OP early next week hopefully.

Your nerves must be shredded! Give the little fella a stroke for me and hopefully he will have a restful night and be fine in the morning.0 -
Just come across this thread. Paws crossed for jack, he looks gorgeous. I have a stumpy black schnauzer with a wonky ear that looks very much like him.0

well, he's literally bouncing off the walls today. Tail wagging, wanting to play. If it wasn't for the sores on his eyes and feet at the moment you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with him.
My sis in law just commented something interesting, Jack had a round of toast last night because of his runs and hasn't had his usual food and biscuits. She wondered if his cheerfulness was because his tummy wasn't struggling to process food? Its an interesting point, we have noted Jack is happy to get home from the vets when he is in all day for tests and seems to have more energy, and the vet doesn't feed him.
Something to mention tomorrow I think.0 -
Definitely tell the vet about that. It might just be the one symptom that'll make everything fall into place and you will finally have a diagnosis. I do hope so.0

How did Jack's bile stim test go, pulliptears? And how is he today?0

He came home around 3pm, the nurse said he's been a model inmate and had eaten the food he was supposed to eat (not that eating has ever been an issue for Jack I did half expect him to be stubborn!), he also let the nurse clean his eyes up a bit and they have now prescribed some drops so hopefully we can start to clear that up too. Results wont be back until next wednesday so a bit longer than I'd hoped for.
He's been waggy since he got home, he sat in the garden with me for a bit and we stole lots of peas from OH's pea plant and sat on the deck eating them

Then he's had a bath, ate a second tea and is currently snoring in his basket.

Well that sounds positive! His eyes do look sore though, poor little guy. Is that one of those lampshade things round his neck? He looks so sorry for himself, doesn't he?
Keep us informed, won't you?0 -

They are so sore, I keep bathing (the chamomile has improved them quite a bit!) but I've been asking the vet for weeks for help with them. I appreciated she was trying to treat his condition as a whole but they did need controlling. He does look fed up on that pic, but he was waggy I promise, he loves peas from the pod so he was waiting for me to pick the next peapod for him to eat!
The thing around his neck is an inflatable buster collar to stop him nibbling at his front paws. Its much much comfier than the plastic ones and doesn't make his face sweat as much. He sometimes wears that but I also take it off and put him baby scratchmitts on for an hour to give him a break. He amazes me that he doesn't pull them off.
I'll keep updating because it's helpful to me as well to look back and see what he's had done and when etc. Also, its lovely having some support
