...and I don't think I'll sleep tonight. My beautiful gorgeous fat Scottie dog has this evening started to wee blood. He's 8 years old and my most faithful companion who follows me everywhere. He's been fairly quiet for some time now but I put it down to age and him finally starting to calm down a bit.
I've recently changed his diet to Arden Grange after his coat became quite dull with his old extruded food and he's seemed a lot happier, eating normally, drinking normally etc
Of course, any Scottie owner will automatically think that it's bladder cancer as it's so common in the breed. He's off to the vet in the morning but I'm almost terrified that it wont be a simple infection
No sleep for me tonight worrying Please reassure me and tell me your dogs have urinated blood and had bladder infections.

(((HUG))) My spaniel had cystitis and was weeing with a little bit of blood in it - hopefully your scotties is similar....
good luck tomorrow xxxDo not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup0

My brother's dog was also weeing blood when he was a puppy, sometimes very dark red. It had countless trips to the vets and masses of checks (basically everything that could be done without physically operating/opening it up - luckily it was insured) and they could find nothing wrong. Several years on, he's now a happy & healthy adult dog, but they never found what the cause was for sure. As Trudij said, it could just be a case of cystitis. If your dog seems happy enough in himself, is eating & drinking okay, then try not to worry. You're definitely doing the right thing by getting him to the vets though. GOOD LUCK!!!0

As predicted I've had no sleep lol. Its been on my mind all night if I'd read in his breed papers he'd been DNA checked on his bloodline and I've had a look this morning and he has. Thats offered me a small comfort.
He's as waggy as ever this morning, went all night with no accidents and his wee. although still bloody, is now a different colour again from last night. Off to the vets in a second. I'm a little more hopeful 0 0

We are home and Jack is fast asleep on the rug after creating holy hell in the vets.....Jack's defence mechanism against vets is to roll over lmao
He's a very poorly little boy. His urine contains a heck of a lot of blood. The good thing (from my worry point of view) is that he has a raging temperature which points more to infection. He also has a lot of glucose in his water and a quick blood tests reveals he is what the vet is currently calling 'borderline diabetic'.
He's had jabs and is back again in the morning, when she will reassess and have the results from a kidney test and do a different blood test for diabetes again 0 0

:grouphug: You have done your absolute best, whipped him off to the vet at the earliest opportunity.
Try not to worry - easier said than done - as borderline diabetes may well be controllable with diet alone, many humans and pets thrive with the right treatment. Do ask the vet about probiotic supplement (friendly bacteria) to repopulate the gut flora after the antibiotics, this will help his immune function, absorption of nutrients, healthy poops and so on.
When you called your boy fat is that a turn of phrase or is he actually overweight? In susceptible dogs and cats foods which are high in grains can contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of diabetes. So you might consider switching to a high meat/ grain free food. Maybe do some online research so you feel you are taking positive steps and so you know what you want to discuss with the vet?Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

Thank you. Hard not to worry isn't it?
He is overweight, has been since he was castrated really but not massively so, he just has a rather fat bum lol. The vet says he could do with losing a few pounds but he is a big Scott anyway in comparison to most I have seen.
He was on some generic extruded food but I noticed his coat which has always been beautiful and shiny started to become dull and flaky. I moved him to Arden Grange Senior about a week ago and I have noticed a coat improvement since then. I also switched his treats to Arden Grange.
Funnily enough my sis in law just suggested I feed him a few teaspoons of live yoghurt though I shall leave him on his standard diet now so as not to confuse any symptoms.
I do feel happier knowing that it is more likely to be an infection now, but I'm a little annoyed with myself for putting the coat problems down to food and not considering diabetes. That said, he has no other symptoms of it such as excessive drinking etc.
Fingers crossed for some improvement tomorrow.0

Why aren't you down the vets immediately ?' You only live once ! Don't live to regret the past, But to enjoy the future '
