Lots of folks have answered about litter tray liners, so here's my advice on feeding. And I'm a pet nutritionist too ;)

Firstly, feed dry food. Right now a kitten eats a tiny little bit of meat, but a fully grown adult cat needs up to 2-3 cans of meat a day! Thats a lot of money. Dry food - better value. Ignore whiskas, its designed for us to look at and think its tasty, so we pay the extra thinking cats bother to notice the pretty colors.

For budget brands, try asda own kitten, it's good value for money and good quality.

Stick to chicken and look for 'chicken breast' not chicken meal, which is any bits of chicken. Beef and other flavours are filled with extras to bulk it out as beef is more expensive. Fish is another rip off, most of it is chicken with tuna added in to make it smell.

Get your kitten onto best quality you can afford and don't go switching flavours, it just makes for fussy cats.

Sorry if I seem mean, most of you will be sitting there thinking poor cat... LOL!

Tigs, i'm very interested in the 'chick crumbs' litter. I have always used the fullers earth litter from lidl/aldi/wilkinsons and whilst it's ok I do like the idea of using something less messy and healthier for cats/ me and the environment. Plus I like the idea that it's flushable down the loo.

How long have you been using it and is it really all it's cracked up to be......as for the worlds best at £36 a bag they can shove it....i'll have the same stuuf cheaper ta very much!
  • Hi

When my cat used to use a litter tray, we would use newspaper and tesco value cat litter.

My cat hasn't used a litter tray for years, when I moved house 2 years ago I was advised to keep him indoors for at least a week until he got used to his new surroundings. He refused point blank to use a litter tray and after 2 days of not going we had to let him out, luckily he came back after doing his business!!

I always used Fullers earth litter for my last cat, who sadly died aged 19 earlier this year, I was loathe to try and change her litter as she had used fullers earth all her life so when I adopted two kittens at the end of April I took the plunge!

I started my two new kittens on it from day one when they arrived home, they are fine using it and have had no accidents so must be happy with it.

You need to have the tray filled fairly deep rather than a thin layer, it clumps really well but as I said I only flush the poos as if I flushed all the wees I would be wasting loads of water with all that flushing! The wees do flush though, when you put them in the toilet bowl it goes from a solid clump back to grain sized again and obviously being corn based there are no problems flushing it.

The only negative is that I do find it tracks outside the litter tray from their feet even though they have hooded trays, mind you the fullers earth stuff tracked a bit aswell and my two are ferocious diggers! I just hoover a bit more regularly near their trays.

Someone from another forum was actually buying stuff on ebay branded as 'just like World's Best cat litter' for £13 + vat + £9 shipping. She took the plunge and bought a sack of chick crumbs only to find it was the same stuff all along!!

Here's a pic of what it looks like, the pieces are a bit smaller than the fullers earth I used to use...

Thanks Tigs, the tracking it across the floor will be nothing new- my two dig like mad and that fullers earth stuff goes all over the place.

I'm going to try the chick crumbs on your reccomendation, really like the sound of it.

We're getting wheely bins this summer in our area so to be able to flush the poos will be a whole lot better than sticking them in the bin :-)

Will let you know what the cats think of their new litter once i've got it. Think i'll mix it in with the old stuff at first to let them get used to it!

Hi Tigs, thanks for the info about chick crumbs! I've found it on the Titmuss website for about £6/20kg plus £6 p&p - is this a reasonable price? We don't have a car so it's always a bit of a struggle carrying heavy bags of litter on the bus! I had heard people raving about 'World's Best', if this is essentially the same stuff I'm prepared to give it a try; provided I can find someone online who can deliver it to me!
    2015 comp wins - £370.25
Recent wins: gym class, baby stuff
Thanks to everyone who posts freebies and comps! :j

I've never used World's Best but apparently it's essentially the same stuff as they are both corn based crumb type things. The WB looks more refined but they both do the same job and are both flushable. The ones in Jollyes are called 'chick start crumbs' but the normal name is just 'chick crumbs'.

£6 is a good price, just checked and my last sack was £7.49 from Jollyes, with delivery it obviously makes it £12 though. As a substitute for WB then £12 is a good price but saying that £12 for a sack of litter does seem quite pricey. If you're paying that much to get whatever you use now, delivered, then I'd go for it if I were you. If not is there not someone that could give you a lift to somewhere like Jollyes?
