estimating bank charges over the years

hi
i was going to go through the process of reclaiming fees from my bank(s) but i think i've got rid of most of my old statements
i wasnt sure whether i should just estimate charges for the past 6 years from my banks (abbey and natwest) and write to them claiming these back, or is it better to write to them first with a £10 cheque and get an exact amount?
in peoples experience, is it better to hit the banks with an accurate figure? i think this is better as i can fully claim everything i have paid in full, but the longer i take, the more charges fall out of the 6year limit and lowers my claim! bit confused
and hoping someone could guide me to the right way of going about it!!
cheers

Get the exact amount; then you are acting lawfully - unlike them !0

It is such a bad idea to even think of estimating your charges. If any of your claims get to court, they will likely ask you for a list of how you arrived at the figure you are claiming. If you can't produce one, or produce a bogus list (they could check whether it's accurate or not). You'd be stuffed!!! Your claim would very likely be thrown out of court. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

I have few accounts and have been charged on a few of them but not got statements. As I have noticed that lots of people are not receivng duplicates with in the 40 days is it worth putting an estimated amount down? I would imagine if you over estimate they will advise you. Does anyone know?0

This has been done, but it's not advisable. You should be sending a schedule of charges detailing the date, amount and reason for each charge to the bank. If you fail to do this, your court claim could be struck out on the basis you have not provided the defendant with information pertaining to the claim.0 -
ok will do all the letters today requesting statements.

Please can someone help?
I am trying to claim back bank charges from Abbey, however I only have the last 6 months statements. I obtained a template letter from the internet which explained that the charges being asked for were estimated on the last 6 months. This amount was just over £9K!! The letter stated that if they disagreed with this amount to reply to me within the next 7 days detailing the amount of charges and refunding these to me. The letter was sent recorded mail and was received by them on 20/2/07.
7 days have now lapsed and no communications have been received. What should I do next, as I know I have paid lots of charges over the last 6 years but I doubt its that much. If possible I would like to claim interest, but it is impossible to work out due not knowing the exact amount owed to me, and from what date

You need to start back at the beginning and get your information/statements using the letter in Martin's article, link in my signature. I'm guessing you used the template from the BBC website which says you can estimate some if you don't have all your statements but estimating 5 1/2 is far too many.
The bank can and do check the claim against their records and the list of charges and what they are, this list in fact forms your defence should you take the bank to court.
I can only advice you what to do if you are following Martin's tried and tested route.0 -
Hello there,
I still have about 2 weeks to wait until my 40 days is up, and am keen to start the reclaim process. I have very little idea of the amount I am due over the past 6 years - it might be £500 or £1500 - I just don't know.
Can anyone tell me whether I can simply estimate the amount and the interest for the purposes of the demand letter, and then change the amount to an exact sum as and when I know this?
Please help,
Thanks0 -
Hi there,
I worked out the interest rate over the last 6 years, works out to be just under 3%, so therefor i just stuck on 3% interest.0 -
Please read the previous posts before you think of estimating your charges.0
