Tyres - What is the Truth?

Is the phrase "i have not seen" difficult to read or are you really as stupid as you make out.
And you want us to believe you are job.
Don't make me laugh you are either a Special or a Community Support Officer.
You also have no idea as to the skill set and abilities of an experienced ambobod.
Who do you think works out the mechanism of injury involved?
Seriously you really know very little, or do you only know what you have seen on Casualty and The Bill. Hers a clue, they are fiction, not fact, LOL.0 -
There are so many people with no understanding of the basics.
It's no wonder though really, is it?
At the beginning of this thread I asked what I thought was a pretty straightforward question. I have received categorically opposite advice, together with every variation in between.
Along the way, various other questions / issues have been raised. Again, no-one seems to know the definitive answers, and everyone has their own opinion.
And this from a collection of people who all profess to know what they're talking about. I, on the other hand, fully acknowledge that, when it comes to tyres, I don't know what I'm talking about. That's why I'm so confused by the myriad contradictory replies here, and no better off than I was at the beginning of the thread. All we seem to have established is that I shouldn't trust the tyre dealers (unless I happen to be passing through Rainham), and that everything else is open to opinion.
I'm beginning to think it'd be easier to get the bus. Cue huge debate about bus tyres...............0 -
Sorry about that Sue.
At least you know your car is safe.
Just try and read between the lines as there is good info being posted.
The thread will soon degrade into a love in between Flyboy and Woody.
Neither of whom seems able to do anything but slag off every opinion without actually giving anything positve to the thread. Happily it won't be long before Woody's current user name becomes Inactive!0 -

Welcome to MSE the only forum where members will still argue even when they agree with each other.
Seriously though you have had some positive answers from some posters with links to outside independent reviews i'd start your search there and read the reviews.
Just stay away from the budget tyres, go for something mid range and you can't go too far wrong. The difference between the mid range tyres are so minimal that unless you want to be really anal about it then its not worth worrying about.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

Go on then tell us your vehicle examination qualifications.0 -

Quite. It's why I wasn't overly fussed about the rears on my Volvo being almost down to the legal limit because it's a FWD car meaning it can drag itself around the corners (and yes, my tyres have been replaced now).
There is a massive difference in stopping distance between crappy tyres and decent tyres. I will never, ever buy cheapo tyres because of the difference in the stopping power of them - and I hope that if I ever have to emergency brake, I don't have an idiot behind me who hasn't bothered to spend the money on their tyres.
However, it's not just the brand you choose - you need to make sure your geo and tracking is correct and ensure your tyres are inflated correctly. It's also not just about the tread that's left - it's also about how perished the tyres are. I was chatting to a classic car specialist and he said he reckoned a number of classic car accidents are because the cars do so little mileage that the tread is fine however the tyres are perished and this can cause things like blow-outs.
Nice link on tyres here: http://www.carsguide.com.au/site/tools-and-advice/hints-and-tips/cheap_tyres_are_risking_lives
To cut the price of my tyres, I tend to buy online and then get someone to fit them for me (my local tyre place charges me £10 for fitting, including balancing)0 -
Seriously will the 3 of you give it a rest now, nearly every thread turns into 3 pages of you 3 bickering like little school girls. Everyone is entitled to an opinion whether you agree or not with that opinion is irrelevant. If you disagree, thats fine state your reasons for disagreeing and move on stop harping on about the same things over and over...............Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0

Indeed SueC, that's the way it always goes with tyre debates.
We've had the new ones on the front vs rear debate, with a bit of wheel alignment and snow tyre action thrown in for good measure. Some people like cheap tyres, some pay a premium. That's life, and that's why all types are available for sale.
People will argue on these forever and ever. It's up to you to decide what to go for.0 -

I am sure I mentioned that I normally go for midrange tyres and premiums when flush, but now regret my recent dive into the land of cheapies and freely admit that I regret buying them, I thought that was a new route to take:D0
