I also had this email from a person off the sony forum who works for sony (but just on the net)

Sorry to read about it. There has certainly been some folks on this forum raising their concerns regarding faults to this unit. However we sold a huge amount of them and from what I can tell the failure rate is very small and certianly not indicative of any sort of inherrent problem.

Thats not to say you cant raise the issue. While I cannot speak on their behalf I would send the details, along with a repair estimate form the authorised repair centre to the CIC Core team and the address below
    Customer Information Centre
    Sony United Kingdom Limited
    Jays Close
    Basingstoke
    Hants
    RG22 4SB

    Hope this helps

I think i might be better dealing with currys? As its £60 and they come and take the telly and offer free repair if its manufacturing fault, sony seems to want similair at their repair centre but then im not sure what they will do? From other posts on forum it sounds like they offer partial payment for repairs hence why i think im better off with currys?
My partner is paid 29th of this month so unless he makes some extra cash before then i wont be able to update for a little while.
    Thanks

I am right now in a similar situation...and just posted on it....

Panasonic TVs 'Red Light Of Death'! (From Currys). facebook_share.jpg
    [URL="http://twitter.com/?status=https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3361028 tweet.jpg [/URL]

xyxwave.gif I have a Panasonic Plasma TV TX-P42G10B which I purchased from Currys on 29th August 2009 which makes it under 2 years old.

Recently the TV started to switch itself off. On trying to turn it back on again either from the power button or the remote sometimes it will turn on for a while and then turn off. Other times it is trying to turn on with the red light flashing but not turning to green and the TV on.

I now have Currys coming out to look at it next thursday 21st July 2011 and they have already charged me £60 on my Debit Card just for the call out and so called assessment.

I have told them that I have Googled this particular fault and it is a well known one in most Panasonic Plasma TVs (TX Range particularly) both here in the UK plus America.

This fault is apparantly know as "THE RED LIGHT OF DEATH" diablotin.gif and seems to be a fault in the Power Supply to the inner workings of the TV.

I have therefore told Currys that in my opinion this is an inherant fault and under the SALE oF GOODS ACT 1979 I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR REPAIR.

I made the person who I booked the repair with note that I was paying the £60 under protest. She did say that if it is indeed an inherant fault that my £60 will be refunded and I will not be charged.

That £60 is also just for the assessment.....so god only knows what the final cost may be.....which I am convinced I shall not be out of pocket with when all is said and done.

Picture a Bulldog with a tasy bone.....then picture me!

Perhaps I am being over pessimistic here, but I think I have a battle on over the cost of repair...but we will see and I will keep informed here how I go on.biggrin.gif

Perhaps Small Claims Court.......here I come?!

    In the meantime... http://panasonicplasmafail.blogspot....asma-fail.html

The Sale Of Goods Act 1979 'Inherant Fault' Etc.

Q1. What is an inherent fault?

A fault present at the time of purchase. Examples are:
    • an error in design so that a product is manufactured incorrectly
    • an error in manufacturing where a faulty component was inserted.
The "fault" may not become apparent immediately but it was there at the time of sale and so the product was not of satisfactory standard.
Q2. Do I only have rights for 30 (or some other figure) days after purchase?

No. Depending on circumstances, you might be too late to have all your money back after this time, but the trader will still be liable for any breaches of contract, such as the goods being faulty. In fact, the trader could be liable to compensate you for up to six years.
Q3. Are all goods supposed to last six (or five) years?

No, that is the limit for bringing a court case in England and Wales (five years from the time of discovery in Scotland's case). An item only needs to last as long as it is reasonable to expect it to, taking into account all the factors. An oil filter would usually not last longer than a year but that would not mean it was unsatisfactory.

If you do manage to get a refund or anything, make sure you buy your TV from somewhere that gives more than a 1 year warranty as standard. I think even the sony centre do 3 now. It'd avoid all this trouble.

    Hi vyle.....yes I agree!

Funny enough because I was happy with my Panasonic 42", 6 months ago I purchased an Panasonic TX-P50G10B (50 inch...my missus likes them big!;)) for the living room....while the previous Panasonic is now in the dining room.

The latest one has a 5 year guarantee which was a special offer Panasonic was making at the time.

The latest model also has the red blinking light process which seems to be on most of the Panasonic TVs and then (hopefully to green for the telly to be ON) process.

At least I do not need to worry about my new set.....because if the RED LIGHT OF DEATH:mad:) does happen...it will get repaired under the guarantee.

    In the meantime....let battle commence!:rotfl:

For your further info I ave just sent this E. Mail to Panasonic. I will of course keep you informed. Good luck with yours.

In the meantime go to AV Forums and look up Panasonic Power supply...lots of people complaining there also.

    Panasonic Out Of Warranty Inquiry.

    16th July 2011.

    Dear Sir,
I purchased my Panasonic TX-P42G10B from Currys online on 29th. August 2009. Recently the TV started showing off in so much that on pressing the start up power button either from the Remote Control or or the TV switch the red light power light would flicker but the TV would refuse to turn on. Occasionally the TV would switch on only to switch itself off again after a short passage of time.

On contacting Currys Service Dept. I was informed that as the set was outside of the usual one year Warranty period then I would be charged £60 (which I have already paid) for the engineer to come out and possibly take the set away for assessment. I would then be charged extra to put right whatever problem there is with the set.

Please note that I advised Currys that this set is still under 2 years old and I believe this particular problem is inherent with many Panasonic models of plasma TV, including the TX-P range, and because of this I expect the 1979 Sale Of Goods Act to cover this particular repair, and therefore I am requesting that I am not charged.

Currys have said that if indeed Currys repair found this problem to be inherent then my £60 would be refunded and I would not be charged further.

Currys are coming to collect the set on Thursday 21st. July 2011.

There is lots of evidence both here and in America in respect of complaints about this particular range of Panasonic Plasma TVs to the extent that this fault with Panasonic TVs is commonly known as 'The Red Light Of Death'!

    http://panasonicplasmafail.blogspot....asma-fail.html

    ..........................

In the meantime I am asking you for Panasonics opinion in respect of my request that I not be charged for this particular repair?

    Best Regards

boozecruiser, stop hi-jacking this thread. The problems with your TV and ops TV are not comparable & not even the same brand. Except op seems to be dealing with their issues a lot better.

Hi Boozer hope you get your problem sorted.
Not heard from currys yet regards ours.
Checked the 'Track your fault online' which told us to ring and rang to be told there is no update.
We would of just accepted that it had gone bad the telly but after googling sony bravia kdl40v3000 and seeing loads of other people with the same problem and them getting theirs fixed for free or replacements we thought we would take it further after all we can not afford to go out and buy another just like that and it will feel good if something good does come out of it!

Heard from currys about 10ish days ago saying our TV was 'In repair'
Not heard anything so rang today to be told they had been waiting on a LCD panel but they are no longer in stock and they are not available anymore so somebody from a different department will be phoning tomorrow to see what 'arrangement' we can come too.
Will be interesting to see if we will be offered a partial refund for the tv taking into account depreciation or to offer another tv off similair value in todays money which ive a feeling if we are looking at £200-£300 then it will be a lower spec model.
    We shall see.

You MIGHT get £500 if you are lucky,

There is a small amount of leeway the person on the other end can do without escalating it, (usually in the range of 10-20% of the initial offer)

If you get anymore than £500, then take it as its a generous offer. But I'd expect a rough estimate of £400 ish, which isn't too shabby.

You can get a few really good Sonys for £550 to £600
  • well...............
They have refunded the £60 and offered £290.
I think my partner is going to accept this as he does not want his broken telly back.
Im inclined to think have the telly back though?
It makes £350 for a new tv which we wouldnt get the same spec/quality for i dont think. I may be wrong will be looking online tonight. If anyone knows of any good full hd tv deals 40" and above then id be grateful to hear!
