Faulty Bravia KDL40v3000 3years old from currys

Options
Hi
I have a just turned 3 year old telly. A sony Bravia v3000. Bought in july 2008.
For the past year there has been black smudges appearing on the screen which although annoying we have never done anything about it. My partner has been worrying the telly is going to die and we can not afford a replacement.
I did a quick google as i didnt think it was right a telly should die this quick!
We had my dads old tv before this, an old CRT that was nearly 20 years old!
I found loads of threads like these

http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-led-lcd-tvs/1230539-sony-bravia-v3000-vertical-shadow-problem-2.html
Sony have acknowleded there is a problem with the x and w series but not the V.

Under the sales of good act where would i stand with currys?
Ive read that replacement panels fail after about 6 months anyways and the more recent posts are that the panels are not in stock anymore so people are being given a EX503 instead which is another old discontinued sony tv.
Would be able to get a cash refund as we paid cash for it. Still got the reciept.
Any help on what steps to take from savvy money savers as we forked out £1000 only 3 years ago when money was better and can not do that now.

We also have another issue with sony over the whole playstation hacking and ps3 overheating and dieing.
They used to be known for being a good brand but now i think they are just rubbish and are going down the loo lol

Is the TV still in its warranty period? I'd guess not. Did you take out an extended warranty when you bought it? If not, and you haven't made Curry's aware of the black smuges appearing over the last year you might be a bit screwed tbh.

If Sony have acknowledged issues with other series of their TV's but not this one I don't hold much hope that they'll give you a replacement TV.

The only thing you can try with them is writing to Curry's and stating that under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 that either:

1 - The product is not fit for purpose (the black smudges on the screen shouldn't be appearing after 2 years, I don't know how bad this is but I'd not expect a panel to have marks start to appear on it after 2 years). I used this when my 2 year old laptop went in for it's 9th repair in 2 years for the same recurring fault. The chances are it only worked because I'd taken the insurance out on the laptop for £8 a month and they had a log of everytime it had failed.

    or possibly

2 - Durability of the product. Is it unreasonable to expect a TV to be in this condition under reasonable use after 3 years? That's a tricky one though.

The best you are likely to get is either a replacement TV of an equivalent standard to your own or a voucher for the store which again will be to the value of an equivalent standard of TV but at least you'll get to choose your own TV that way. It's very unlikely they'll give you a refund.

At worst they will turn around and say "Sorry but it's out of warranty and you didn't take out extended cover for it". This is a likely outcome if you don't have the extended cover and the manufacturers warranty has run out. It's harsh but they could go down this road.

We bought a Sony Bravia KDL40W4500 in 2009 and had a new screen fitted the following year !! (within the first 12 months) I have just reported the same fault again picture slipping on the left side (by about 6 inches) so I know its the screen again luckily we took out the extended warranty ! otherwise it would have cost a fortune !!....

    Thank you for the replies.
I didnt think i stood much chance without a warrenty but was hoping as others have had TVs replaced without warrenty as 'goodwill' for complaining lots i thought i could be lucky too:o
I have emailed currys and am waiting for a answer. I sent it to customer services.
I have contacted sony through their website too. They contacted me about my partners dead PS3 and offered a replacement for £134 but i know thats just a reconditioned one they send you so my partners just gonna look on 'you tube' and diy fix it.
Shame cant do that with the TV!! lol
It is a !!!!!! though that so many LCD TVs in the Bravia range all have panel failure, maybe they will eventually acknowledge the V series like they have the X and W but i doubt it as they are discontinued TVs now too.

What to do is contact Dixons Retail (specifically the department who deal with OOW repairs)
You can contact them on 08445611234 Option 3 then Option 3 again.

They'll take some details and should do some research on their end (They will check for reports before or it is a series that is known to be inherently faulty or have had independent reports done with the same issue logged before) they should offer a exchange or repair or (and this is the most likely offer) a partial refund. Taking into account how much you paid, vs how long you've used it.

Whatever they offer or you reply you get please keep this thread updated.

Read the SADFART rules and be sure on what you are asking them. Don't mention any secret EU law, state the facts, how disapointed a premium brand has failed and there is a known issue with the panels they use in the same range.

Pretty much what CHC said. Although you can, of course, save yourself the cost of the call and email customerservices@currys.co.uk with the same info.

    Hi
This is the response i got from currys....

    Dear Gemma,

Thank you for your recent contact with us. I have noted your issue, regarding an out of warranty Sony Bravia television.

As a company, we do understand our obligation to provide a remedy for products that fault following the expiry of the guarantee in certain situations. I do appreciate that manufacturing defects may not manifest themselves until after the initial warranty period has expired.

In view of this and in order that we may consider your request, we would like to inspect your product to diagnose the cause of the fault. With this in mind, we will require a payment of £60.00 for us to pick up the product and assess the unit at our repair centre. Should our workshop discover a manufacturing fault with the product, your assessment charge will be refunded and your product repaired at no cost.

Can you please confirm your full postal address, receipt details and a contact number for yourself.

Please can you call us on 0844 561 0000 and quote the reference number above, so that we can discuss this in further detail. We are open 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sundays.

    Kind regards

Would panel failure be classed as a manufacturing error?? And how long would they have the telly for? As we live by our TV :-( lol

It would depend on what has caused the panel failure, but mostly, yet.

Two weeks, maybe? Slightly more if they have to order parts in specially, but most are kept on site, in big boxes.
