    You've unticked too many :)

I'd re-enable the following, using whichever method you are happy with:
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe" /starttray
    RecGuard C:\Windows\SMINST\RecGuard.exe

Then in Hijackthis, just TICK and FIX this proxy setting:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1;2

Great...... I only got 3 wrong so thats not bad! I've changed it all now. I really can't say thank you enough. My computer is now behaving better than I can remember for a long time. It is now shutting down properly which used to take up to 25 mins and the same for starting up. You have all been so helpful :j:beer::j ...... but I may be back lol !!!

Nice one lucasmum, hope you're feeling chuffed with yourself. :T

You didn't panic, followed the advice, weren't distracted by others bickering ;), reported back (often missed out), all equals success.
    Move along, nothing to see.

    A ruler.

Are you really comparing the functionality of an intentionally limited device with something that is designed to be extremely flexible?

A longer battery life is nothing more than a consolation if you are finding it difficult to do what you actually want to do on a device.

Sigh because of another fanatical Apple poster.

I'm always impressed when useless logic and argument is finished off with a baseless 'fanatical' accusation.

The OP asked for opinions. Sorry not all opinions are the same. You would really hate it if she bought an Ipad.:rotfl:

I'm not sure about your line on battery life. The OP wants to use email and WWW - this is hardly difficult on an Ipad. I'd say it's a whole lot easier.

It's always good to see advice be useful, so thanks for the feedback :)

Now that you've shown that the laptop still has some life left in it, it might be an idea to run some followup scans when you have the time.

    I would suggest:
aswMBR (run it and follow the guide on the website, don't download the Avast definitions when it asks as you already have them and it'll start a long Avast scan.)
    http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.htm

Hitmanpro (don't worry about cookies, feel free to ask for advice with any detections as it does find false positives with older computers)
    http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro

Then run the default scan with Dr Web (when it runs, it'll ask if you want to be in 'Enhanced Protection Mode', I would select 'cancel' if you want to be able to use the computer)

lol did I get ahead of myself! Right, I will have to start again in the morning coz I can't think straight anymore, I don't know how you guys do it!

Bickering, what bickering ;) Actually I find it interesting to get peoples different point of views even if they get heated between themselves. At this rate I will have my (almost) fully functioning laptop and still have the choice to get an Ipad. I suppose I only wanted one coz I find them amazing...... when you don't understand much techie its easy to be amazed!!:D

to be honest you really do not need to spend that much money on a system for emails and browsing you can pick up a laptop for under £300 with will be more than fast enough

remember ipads also need a computer to sync with through itunes, they also do not have much storage for photos, the connections are VERY limited in that they have no USB ports etc

also depending on what exactly dieing a slow death means you might not actually need a new system https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849= is an excellent guide to see if you can get some more speed out of your old system

When ios5 is released in September the iPad and iPhone will NOT need a computer to sync with, you will be able to run the iPad on it's own.

If you wish to add music from CD's and photos from a camera onto your ipad though, you cant as far as i know, so the laptop would be the better option...
