I would change all of those to 'No' apart from Avast and Synaptics.
If it causes you to lose functionality for any of the programs you use just go back and change it back to yes.
Edit: and leave Malwarebytes at Yes if you have the paid-for version.604!0 -
But still restricted, right?
Only in so far as the requirements of whatever program you want to use.Is this opinion or fact? What is it based on?
A ruler.ARM architecture is regarded by the whole tech industry to be better than x86. That's why everyone is switching to it, if they haven't already.
Are you really comparing the functionality of an intentionally limited device with something that is designed to be extremely flexible? The OP just wants to browse the web and use email. Don't think it's fair she settles for 'fair' battery life.
A longer battery life is nothing more than a consolation if you are finding it difficult to do what you actually want to do on a device.
Sigh because of another fanatical Apple poster.0 -

No I don't use it for any kind of phone. and sorry what do you mean by the above? I have gone for the free trial of malwarebytes at the moment.0 -

There are a lot of programs automatically running at the start of Windows, so I'll make a list of those you can definitely turn off, and those you optionally might turn off.
If you press Start > Run, then type MSCONFIG and enter, then click on the STARTUPS tab, you'll get a list of programs set to start at Windows. The easiest way to disable them is to untick them - that way, you can just retick them if it turns out you want or need an item.
The following can generally be unticked without a problem:
[igfxtray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
[igfxhkcmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
[igfxpers] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
[HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hp\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
[QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
[ArcSoft Connection Service] C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Connection Service\Bin\ACDaemon.exe
[Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
[Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
[SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
[TkBellExe] "C:\program files\real\realplayer\update\realsched.exe" -osboot
[Symantec PIF AlertEng] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PIFSvc.exe" /a /m "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\AlertEng.dll"
You might also untick these:
[Cpqset] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Default Settings\cpqset.exe (HP settings)
[kdx] C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KHost.exe -all
After you manage to get through all that, might be an idea to restart the computer and see how it goes. It'll say a message about a selective startup, which is normal.
It's pretty much the same as Russ posted in #23 but it's easier to do it in CCleaner than msconfig.604!0 -

Yeah do whichever you find easiest for sure. I should probably get people to use CCleaner to do it really. Autoruns is my tool of choice.0 -
Sigh because of another fanatical Apple poster.
I can't ever foresee having a need for one - either I want a proper computer*, or I want something portable like a tablet PC, I don't want some horrible malformed hybrid of the two like a netbook.
You don't need to be an Apple fanboy to dislike netbooks.
*with full-sized keyboard with separate number pad, full sized proper (4 way scroll etc) mouse, large WUXGA (or higher res) monitor/screen, highish performance innards.0 -
Ok, I think I have done everything that you have suggested apart from the proxy settings. I followed the instructions you gave but when I pressed ok nothing happened??
