Somebody will advise what further action is needed on your MBAM and HJT logs.

Go back into CCleaner, select Tools in the left hand menu, then the Start Up button. On the bottom right click on 'save to text file..' then save it on your desktop or in your documents folder. Post the contents of the text file on here.

It just means that at peak times, the computer's need for memory is greater than what is available, so it has to use the "virtual memory" on the hard drive. You'll notice when this is happening, as you'll see a lot of disk activity.

You've a lot of toolbars: yahoo, google, realplayer, acrobat. It might be an idea to get rid of one of yahoo or google. Do you use the Realplayer download and record plugin for Internet Explorer?

I'd uninstall Registry Reviver - something like that will do more harm than good. Generally best to avoid registry optimisers and the like.

Could you double check your proxy settings in Internet Explorer? Click on tools > Options > connections settings, etc like in this photo, and describe what you see if that's okay.
    http://www.users.on.net/~russ/connection.png

I would consider uninstalling Java, as it is just a big security risk. If it turns out that a particular program needs it, then at worst you can just reinstall it.

Your Adobe Reader might be out of date, I'd definitely check if you need to update it to the latest as this is another big security risk: http://get.adobe.com/reader/

I'd go back into Hijackthis, then TICK and FIX the following:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://home.alot.com/?client_id=BD4D...=2.5.15000.521
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://search.alot.com/web?q=&pr=aut...=2.5.15000.521
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: ALOT Toolbar Helper - {14CEEAFF-96DD-4101-AE37-D5ECDC23C3F6} - C:\Program Files\alot\bin\BHO\alotBHO.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: JQSIEStartDetectorImpl - {E7E6F031-17CE-4C07-BC86-EABFE594F69C} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\deploy\jqs\ie\jqs_plugin.dll

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Registry Reviver] C:\Program Files\Reviversoft\Registry Reviver\RegistryReviver.exe
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user')
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

There are a lot of programs automatically running at the start of Windows, so I'll make a list of those you can definitely turn off, and those you optionally might turn off.

If you press Start > Run, then type MSCONFIG and enter, then click on the STARTUPS tab, you'll get a list of programs set to start at Windows. The easiest way to disable them is to untick them - that way, you can just retick them if it turns out you want or need an item.

The following can generally be unticked without a problem:
    [igfxtray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
    [igfxhkcmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
    [igfxpers] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
    [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hp\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    [ArcSoft Connection Service] C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Connection Service\Bin\ACDaemon.exe
    [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
    [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
    [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
    [TkBellExe] "C:\program files\real\realplayer\update\realsched.exe" -osboot
    [Symantec PIF AlertEng] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PIFSvc.exe" /a /m "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\AlertEng.dll"

    You might also untick these:
    [Cpqset] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Default Settings\cpqset.exe (HP settings)
    [kdx] C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KHost.exe -all

After you manage to get through all that, might be an idea to restart the computer and see how it goes. It'll say a message about a selective startup, which is normal.

    Hi,
I am hoping that someone knowledgeable will be able to help me. My laptop needs replacing. Its about 7yrs old which must be classed as prehistoric in computer terms. It is just about holding on but it is dying a slow painful death!

I am not techie at all so when I started looking for a replacement I am just bamboozled by the jargon. I use my laptop for basic surfing and emails and not much else. Would anybody recommend an Ipad instead of a laptop as they seem about the same sort of price and rather snazzy!!

If anyone has any suggestions on a replacement I would be ever so grateful. :D

    Get an Ipad.

It's a lot more user-friendly than a cheap netbook, it'll last longer, you'll get better software for it, the battery will last all day, it's easier to hold / carry around, it's faster, using touch is better than using a poor trackpad.

One reader have stated that you need a computer - the next software update will negate the need for one.
One reader stated that you can't view files on it - you can, and there's a number of solutions.

Get an Ipad and enjoy it. Get a netbook and you'll keep coming here for support!

    Your choice.

At most 64gb of storage with no USB storage is what would put me off iPad, additional cost concerns, lack of flash, iTunes & the rediculous outlay would seal the deal, in this situation you can get a cheap (sub £350) laptop capable of running all your software & being portable enough without being restricted to what you can & can't do on it as you would be with an iPad. Don't get me wrong, iPads are great if you need that kind of thing, but a tablet computer isn't a replacement for a traditional system, only a complimentary tool, considering the cost, it'd be an expensive gadget in this case.

Eh? You're restricted by what you can do on a netbook by the tiny keyboard, the crappy CPU and the terrible battery life.

The OP doesn't want or need a million USB cables, 1TB of storage, clunky Windows programmes.

    on a netbook

Not half as restricted as you are with an IPad.
    tiny keyboard

Around 2% less in size but much better for actually typing on.
    crappy CPU

Netbook's have better CPUs than the IPad.
    terrible battery life.

A fair battery life based on what you are able to do with the device.

    Sigh.

Not half as restricted as you are with an IPad. - But still restricted, right?

Around 2% less in size but much better for actually typing on. - Is this opinion or fact? What is it based on?

Netbook's have better CPUs than the IPad. - Again, opinion or fact? ARM architecture is regarded by the whole tech industry to be better than x86. That's why everyone is switching to it, if they haven't already.

A fair battery life based on what you are able to do with the device. - The OP just wants to browse the web and use email. Don't think it's fair she settles for 'fair' battery life.

    Sigh.

    Why the sigh?
