I've always think one of the best things about an August birthday is being able to take advantage of the seasonal fruit available - fresh strawberries and cream on a cake may not be original, but it's a lovely combination ! - but cool storage will be an issue if you're making a large size.
Thanks VfM4meplse was going to be a surprise as I always do her cake as a surprise but have had to ask her what she wants as cannot make my mind up this yr. She said she doesnt want the embossed one and said she wanted something with butterflies (which I had already decided on for the cupcakes to give her friends) She has seen the sugar sheets said she really wants these so the decision has been made at last:T0 -
Hey everyone,I'm not sure if anyone remembers but I was previously asking for opinions on mixers.I went for the kenwood in the end and I am so happy with it so far!:jThank you for helping me decide. My hubby went a bit crackers-nuts at first but after I'd fed him some cake he calmed down!:rotfl:
I have a query.I've been asked to do a quote for a three tiered celebration (betty boop)cake to serve 150 people.I've never baked on this large of scale before and I want to at least cover the ingredients cost.It will prob be a vanilla sponge cake. How on earth do I go about costing it up?The woman was quoted 300 pounds by a cake company and she was shocked.I said that I would never ever charge that much but now I'm wondering what to say next.:o:female:Our 2 gorgeous little girls born 2006 and 2010

I did a 3 tier recently for 120 and it cost me £130. That was a chocolate, lemon and carrot. You literally have to sit down and cost out all your ingredients, icing, cake boards, dowels, boxes etc and take it from there.
I sometimes don't think that people realise how much cost - both time and money - goes into making and decorating a cake! x0 -
Hi Nat,thank you for the reply.I think my problem is that I don't know the specifics in terms of how she wants it decorated,so it's hard to give her a figure as I am not use to this type of scale.Think I'll sit with my pen and paper and try to cost it out like you say.
In terms of transport,do you hand over/deliver the tiered cakes seperately in boxes or the cake together as a whole?(That would be one big box!)I'm petrified it will be destroyed in transit.:p:female:Our 2 gorgeous little girls born 2006 and 2010

I handed it over tiered at their request and told them to sit it in the boot but they travelled 20 miles with it on someones kne and the bottom tier slid
Can you take it to the venue and tier it for them there? If not then I'd put all the dowels in place and hand it over separately x0 -
Thanks Nat,I was thinking I'd rather hand it over seperately!I did read about your cake in the thread. It was absolutely not your fault, although it would have shook my confidence too.It was a beautiful cake!
Out of interest,if it's not too bold and cheeky, how much do you add on to the cost for time stood on your feet?I always worry about asking for too much, but it's pretty knackering stood on your feet for hours (even if we do enjoy it!).:rotfl:
Don't worry if that's too personal a question hun. x:female:Our 2 gorgeous little girls born 2006 and 2010

I tend to only charge for the cost of ingredients etc much to my husbands annoyance. I'm not a business so don't ask for anything above and beyond what it costs to make. I'm pretty sure my gas bill is on the rise as the oven is never off! I see it all as practice as one day I maybe would like to start properly as a business x0
