I made some scones this afternoon and we had afternoon tea for the jubilee with cream, jam and fresh strawberries. First time making scones and they turned out really well, going to try some fruit ones soon :)

Esp as we won't be blessed with warm weather this week - have you seen the thread about turning on the central heating in June? :D

Leaving them out on a counter will only accelerate the rate of attrition - better to hide them in someone else's kitchen. Happy to oblige ;).

Wow, you've all been so busy!

Bindiboo - I have to ask how you got the two-tone effect in the cream roses? And also which nozzles you used? The effect looks really stunning! There are 3 big birthdays coming up this year, I'd love to get that effect for the giant cake I shall be making in the summer!

    Hi

I used my favourite nozzle, the 2d for the rose swirls. The two tone effect is dead easy. before you fill your piping bag with cream or buttercream, put a small smidge of colour towards the tip end of bag and the rub the bag so that the colour distributes. Add your cream/buttercream then pipe and you will get graduations of colour as you pipe.

Thanks! I'm definitely going to try this - will probably have a bit of a play when I make the scones. I'll try it by swirling a drop of food colouring around the inside of my plastic piping tube, and if that doesn't work I'll buy a proper piping bag. I guess with the volume and size of cakes that you make means you use a large bag - any recommendations?

I normally just use the disposable bags from Sainsburys but love the Asda one as they have a grip surface. For the big jobs I have some large disposable piping bags from ebay.

I bought disposable ones this tim for the first time, I bought the large Lakeland ones. They've got a grippy surface too and are huge. I was very pleased with them.

Is there a standard recipe for madeira cake? I've just been using the one in my Debbie Brown book but am curious as to whether people do it differently!
