I sampled a bit today, and strangely the taste had really improved! (Although still not particularly carrot-y).
I'm not a big carrot cake fan so can't say how it compared to other carrot cakes. Everyone at DHs work loved it and a friend made it and got told by a baker that it was the best carrot cake he'd ever tasted!0 -
All your cakes look and sound AMAZING, god I love cake!!
I really hope you don't mind me butting in, but really hoped you talented lot could give me some ideas. We're having a Jubilee pery on Monday and there is a jubilee themed 'Celebration Cake' competiton, judged equally on taste and appeareance. Any ideas? All I can think of is an oblong sponge decorated with rasps and blueberries to make a union jack! Think lots of people will do this?
Any awesome ideas? Not really good at sugarpaste decorations so that is out!
Thanks so muchxx0 -
I think the rectangle cake with the blueberries and raspberries may be a common one as it's on th front over of this months good food magazine so lots will have seen it.
Can you pipe? If so could pipe buttercream instead of the raspberries and blueberries.
You could do a cheesecake type thing with a white cheesecake base with maybe a raspberry jelly layer on top with blueberries on top so you have a red, white and blue layered cheesecake? You could be creative with the flavourings on that as well?0 -

Why not crystallise some red, white and blue flowers as decoration? (Do make sure they're edible first though).Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

here are some cupcakes I've made tonight for my friend as one of her friends at work is 50 on Friday. The warm weather made the icing melt something awful though, hope they'll be ok for Monday.
As for a Jubilee cake, could you cover it in sugarpaste and possible put decorations on it? do a base of white sugarpaste, and then put blue and red stripes or spots? kind of like this - http://www.waitrose.presscentre.com/imagelibrary/detail.aspx?MediaDetailsID=30603 or possibly hearts, like this - http://folksy.com/items/3199798-Jubilee-Cake-Stand-Heart-of-Britain-Hand-painted-Fine-Bone-China-Cake-Stand or even bunting round the outside like this - http://www.rucraftblog.co.uk/heres-a-queens-jubilee-cake-ideas-bunting-cake/
you can buy white sugarpaste and a set of coloured sugarpaste (red, blue, green, yellow and black) in every supermarket now, it costs around £1.50 for the white and just over £2 for the coloured.
You could always print some of these off and make a cupcake cake instead? - http://www.weebirdy.com/2012/05/free-printables-jubilee-cupcake-toppers-and-cake-banners.html

Ooh love the rose cupcakes Moose, very pretty!
This is what I'm hoping to achieve on Sunday for the street party! Must be mad!0 -
wow Becs, thats some cupcakes there!!! Good luck, would love to see a pic!! Thank you very much
, ive recently started doing my cupcakes with the rose and think it looks so much more presentable, if you know what I mean? They seem easy to get them all to look the same, whereas doing a swirl upwards can be a bit unpredictable.

I'm hopeless with the swirl. I started using my 2D tip for both roses and swirls. Can't get the classic 1M swirl at all. They always look lopsided0

Thank you all so so much for your advice - i didnt even think of doing that with cardboard boxes...be just like some of the ice cream vans that put cones in! brill, thank you!! Said to hubby bout it and he going to get some banana boxes from work so can use them.
)
Also thankyou for the trex/butter cream advice. I brought some trex, but i forgot to get butter as had picked up some margerine - will get some and give it a go! :j
I made this chocolate cake earlier - its rather yummy, is a little bit stodgy in the middle, but the skewer came out clean, but one side of the outside had caught a bit. still good though - was bit of effort doing it and letting it cool, but pleased with the outcome. http://www.lindyscakes.co.uk/2011/02/02/lindys-chocolate-fudge-cake-recipe/ (want to try the cola one too as suggested earlier on on here!) Was thinking of using this in the square tin to carve into a number '1'...is there any way from this that i could work out how much butter icing i would need to cover? how do you all work it out, or do you just make up a big batch?
the tin (well silicone) is 25x25 and 6cm deep. One part has risen lot more than others so would have to trim to make it flat, but i havent a clue with the icing. I believe need to do a 'crumb coat' and then a topper finished layer. Would you do the trex mix or just butter for the whole cake?
Sorry for all the questions and a long post!! I dont know how you all do so many cakes to sell / for people...i end up thinking bout these cakes for my lo's birthday party nearly all day and night!! lol!:heart2:Married my Prince Charming on 15th April 2011 - perfect day!
Our little princess born 8th June - she is amazing!! :grinheart
