  • I am a member of David LLoyd Cheshire Oaks. I pay £87 for a single membership which gives use of all facilities with no restrictions on times. There are tennis courts at the club.

My experience isn't good. The membership staff are either dishonest or incompetent. For example, when I gave 3 month's notice to cancel it was suggested I freeze the membership for 6 months instead. I then got chased by the head office for non payment.

You are offered free trials of the facilities but as soon the gym staff knew I didn't want private tutition he was dismissive and reluctant to show me the equipment.

There are many other examples of low standard.

My advice would be to get everything in writing and check all the details. The membership staff will say ANYTHING! and will not return calls once you are signed up.

Got a quote at Epsom DL today.

Individual no rackets £87.75pm on a 12 month contract, or one off payment of £947 (£78pm) = full any time.

    3 month contract £105.25pm.

Would have gone for it if he had thrown in some free guest passes for the wife but no go, and they charge guests £25 a day.

Joined yesterday, Family membership with racquets £155 HTH :)

Was that for anytime use ? do they have a restriction on the amount of family members? we are going to have a look round our local DL tomorrow so would be a good comparison
  • I have recently re-joined David LLoyd in Solihull. Its £78 a mnth for me anytime use no raquets except squash and £7.50 a month for my 2 year old so she can use creche £4 an hour and the pool. I have guest passes given with membership so my 5 year old can use pool after school.

If I want to add 5yo its £25 a month and they offer 3hour club every night and stuff on weekend, might add this when my little one is 3 so they can both use it and I have free time.

My main reason for choosing DL was the fact it had a kids pool and creche facilities, my local gyms dnt offer these facilities and the council pool is awful. Its nice to have a bit of luxury too and they serve Costa coffee. It cost me £15 to take my girls swimming at our local pool so as longas I go regularly I think its well worth the money and they have a good social scene too including parent and baby coffee mornings- as they have a soft play centre (small but ok)

Thinking now perhaps I should apply for a job there.... !!!

Seriously though for families it lovely and when we do have sun, the outdoor pools are great! I was quoted family membership- me, partner and both kids £150 a month so will be upgrading to this on little ones 3rd bday in Feb :)
  • Interesting thread... Just wondered if anyone has managed to get out of paying the extortionate admin fee?? I phoned and was given a price immediately. £135 for family membership ( up to 4 children). I do not know if this includes towels or not or raquets but we are having 3 trial days. This is Birmingham.
  • I paid around £620 for full year membership. this is off peak and no racket sports. I think the admin fee was £45 but they gave me 4 guest passes to cover this.

I got a quote recently for Worcester (opening Dec 2012), £78 anytime racquets or £72.50 from 8a-4p. I'm going to find out whether their all-year indoor courts will be the nice acrylic ones or the bubble domes w/sandy courts.

There's a lack of proper indoor courts north of Malvern, so I may be inclined to join as a founder if the price is right, like discounts for a 12-month one-off or some other discount. I was a member at another club and hated the periodic price increases & arduous cancellation policies.
  • I can add to this...I looked around the David Lloyd gym in Farnham a couple of weeks ago.

It was all very pleasant but I nearly fell off my chair when they wanted £220 (joint membership) per month, considering the local sports centre - which admittedly isn't as plush - does gym memberships for £20 per month. DL said they price so high to "keep the riff raff out" (seriously!).

To be honest, at £220 a month, I think I'm the riff raff they want to keep out...

    :-)
  • My quote:

    1. With or without rackets. - Without
    2. Anytime, or off-peak only. - Anytime
    3. Single, joint (two people), family membership...

Couple £61.64 per person if you pay for one year as a lump, £68.5 / mo otherwise
    Single £70.2 / £78

    4. For which specific gym location, or for any gym countrywide. This was for Solihull (Cranmore).

A few extras thrown in with the package.

I will probably go for this as I am a regular user - at least six visits a week. We have an LA Fitness that is closer to home, but its really dirty. City gyms are nice, but very crowded and can be dirty by about 6pm. DLL is basically a £20 per month premium over city gyms. What I think I will get for that is lots of kit, space, nice pools etc. Seems like a fair deal. I would only spend the £20 in lager anyway. Will most likely be joining today, and will report back. I am mature user of gyms, but other half is not so confident. So, key issue is whether she gets support from staff on how to use kit etc. If response is poor, I will let you all know.

    Best,
