I've been with DL for nearly 4 years, I wish to cancel my membership, I know i have to give 3 months which I accept, I have asked today about it but as DD came out on the 2nd of this month my cancellation will now take 4 months as they take it from the next DD date and not todays date.

Are they allowed to do this

Do you have a modern LA run leisure centre in your area? If so, do check out the prices - it is incredibly cheap compared to the DL type of establishment.

I currently use a modern LA lesiure centre and have to say it's an even worse rip off than DL.

I think it's around half the cost of DL (FYI, the wife and I were quoted something like £165 for joint peak membership in Oxford, no raquets), but the facilities are just so much worse. Things to think about:
    * There are only a couple of hours per week we can actually use the pool, amongst lessons, schools, clubs etc.
    * Facilities are really quite grubby and poorly maintained. Most of the lockers don't work etc.
    * Staff are complete jokers, really poor service
    * Cardio equipment all has a 1 hour limit
    * Limited class timetable

Membership there's about £40/month. I've stopped paying now and just pay to swim every so often, but there was no way it was worth the money. There are *much* nicer places around with better facilities for an extra tenner per month.

I pay £745 a year for my membership, so around £62 a month for anytime membership, I only use the gym/classes and swimming pool so probably don't have access to any courts as I wouldn't have been interested in paying for something I wouldn't use, no towel service because who cares about having a 'free' white towel?

I am in Swindon and switched to DL because as a female who attends the gym alone, I didn't feel comfortable coming out of the Link Centre alone at night, and prefer the poshness and longer opening hours at David Lloyd.

I don't think they've been too bad service wise, the class instructors are fantastic but don't think much of the PT staff, some of them seem a bit condescending if you're really fat and unfit like me!

    looked at one in hatfield.

£95 per month for OH and me no raq.
    £35 per child (8 and 10)
£10 per month for my 3 year old

Total RIP OFF. way too expensive, its a shame as the facility is nice with a lovely outdoor pool (but seriously with our weather), would maybe consider if the cost was half of this but to pay £200 per month for a gym....think NOT
  • I have been a member of Lloyd for 8 yrs but have recently come across some banking style business by my local club in Southampton.
I pay £76 a month for gym and pool. Lloyd has started offering friends and family of staff £50 a month membership which includes everything (pool, gym, racquet sports). Each member of staff at lloyd can get 5 people cheap membership.
The knock on effect has led to a gym which is impossible to use during peak times due to being over crowded and a struggling infrastructure (broken showers, broken spa, dodgy heating and air con).
I have found out that my gym does this since their success is measured by how many new members they pull in not by how many are currently on roll.
I have written letters of complaint but have been completely ignored both by head office and my local centre. If I talk to staff at the centre they simply tell me I can leave at any time.
Problem is that they are simply the best gym around when you consider opening times, car parking, quality of equipment.

Just rang to ask about Vantage membership - no racquets - and it would be £78 per person and £10 for my 3 yr old, per month.
Waiting to hear about prices for my local centre only.
They were very helpful and did not ask any intrusive questions. I am visiting a club near my office this afternoon and am hoping for a week's trial at the one near home before we join.

I have a joint corporate membership at Luton (no racquets there) and we pay £120 per month for the two of us. I've been a member for 5 years and love it - the staff and facilities are great and I've not found anywhere that matches it. I've been a member of a gym for 15 years now - Cannons, Nuffield, local leisure centres, Esporta, Virgin to name a few and DL has been the best so far.

Incidentally my friend pays £6 a session just to swim at her local council leisure centre, I pay £65 per month for unlimited access to the pool, jacuzzi, sauna, massive gym and classes so as long as I use it regularly (and that's the key with any gym membership) I think it's well worth it.

    Some prices-

    No racquets, anytime

Vantage membership (home centre would be cambridge)
    £100 per person
With ipswich as centre - £78.50 per person
Joint vantage membership - £172 at cambridge or £156 at ipswich
    Child (3 yrs old) £10

Not vantage, just cambridge access £80.75 per person
For both of us at cambridge only £140

10% off for payment a year in advance.

I hope this helps people. We did find this out just by ringing the ipswich and cambridge venues.
  • I visited the Southampton branch today with my housemate and was quoted prices for corporate couple membership (we both work for the NHS, but he didn't actually ask us if we were a couple (which we are not), only if we lived at the same address (which we do!)). However, the bit of paper he wrote the quotes on says that proof of relationship will be required, so I guess we won't actually be able to get the rate he has quoted!

Anyway, H&C (can't remember what it stands for, but no racquets) was £64.25 pppm and full memberships was £73.75 pppm.

He didn't mention peak or off-peak, or towels, so no idea on those fronts.
