They're not really anything particularly special either. I've been to a couple on guest memberships and to be honest I fail to see how they can charge such extortionate amounts. Our local leisure centre has far better equipment (granted it was only built 3 years ago) and also has sauna/steam room facilities and a far wider range and number of classes too. I know where I'd rather spend my money, and I do. My annual membership costs less than some of these people are paying for a month!! :rotfl:“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

You're very lucky. The poor hygiene in our local leisure centre pool makes me nauseous, just thinking about it. My wife uses the local DL and it's so worth the money just to swim in a remotely clean pool...the fact that there are more than 8 (yes, 8!) hours of lane swimming available in a week is also a bonus...That's before you even start on the gym.
(It's worthy of note, too, that membership of the local leisure centre costs 75% as much as DL, anyway)0 -
I visited my local DL gym in Essex and they gave me a sheet with all of the options and prices on it so I think the prices must be standard at least within each club. There are so many variations to types of membership it would take me all day to type them all, but I will give a few options to give you some idea (based on standard non-vantage membership):
Full individual: 92.50
full couple: 68.00 pp
full individual off peak: 79.75
full couple off peak: 67.75 pp
no racquets individual: 83.00
no racquets couple: 64.75pp
no racquets off peak individual: 70.75
no racquets off peak couple: 61.50pp
child, 3months to under 3yrs: 8.25
child, 3 to under 5yrs: 11.00
child, 5 to under 14: 25.00
child, 14 to under 18: 56.00
family, no racquets, 2 adults and all children under 18: 160.00
family, full membership, 2 adults and all children under 18: 175.00
There is a deal on at our local one at the moment for no joining fee but you still have to pay an admin fee of 35 per adult and 10 per child (they must do a lot of admin!!!!). They have flexible membership options which are more where you are tied in for 3 months and have a 1 month cancellation period, but for the prices above it is a 12 month contract with 3 month cancellation.
My gym has indoor and outdoor pool (with jacuzzi, steam and sauna), gym, adult classes, cafe. indoor and outdoor tennis courts, badminton and squash courts. There is also a soft play in the cafe area. Children have unrestricted access to the pool apart from before 9am and btwn 12.30 and 1.30. Creche is only available three mornings a week between 9.30 and 11.30, which does mean a lot of classes are out unless you pay for 2 hours at 4.50 per hour. There are a number of kids classes included but probably only one per day for each age bracket per day. Included in the kids membership priice are the gymnastics club, tos football, dance, kickboxing, art and craft , baby rhyme and climb, children's circuits, multi sports (no idea what that covers). I believe they do holiday clubs where the children go in all day every day for a week but this costs extra. Also swimming and tennis lessons are extra ( she said you pay for the term in advance and they work out at about 8pounds per class.
I hope this is helpful. I looked for ages to find this information before i eventually gave up and suffered the marketing tour!!
As a comparison our local leisure club pool is 39.99 per person per month but you have to pay extra for all kids activities and the pool is booked out a lot of the time for school swimming lessons.0 -
moomootron,
Thanks for all the prices.
These are probably the maximum prices for your gym. I believe they vary depending on UK area and on facilities offered. However, the vast majority do not pay those prices.
There are all sorts of concessions and special offers. If you are on benefits, migrant, "re-integrating into society", etc, it costs next to nothing. If you pick up a special deal, you can get full peak time membership with rackets for a whole family for less than another couple pay for off-peak gym only. And a lot of people leave and then rejoin soon after to get 2 or 3 months free. It's a bartering system that punishes the timid and the loyal.0 -

way too expensive as I would want tennis as well. Looking at the timetable you have to pay extra for most of the tennis stuff anyways!
Any other gyms that include tennis?0 -
Went back to DL in Hatfield on a 7 day trial. Its still so much money and TBH there are loads of Chavs in there these days...proper scumbags. Shame but there you go. Why would I pay £300 per month on a 3 month contract for OH and 3 kids to join an exclusive club that's full of scum....Er NO0

Not tennis, but our local council run gym (5 sites) which I belong to (joint membership £68), includes swimming, all classes, badminton and squash. It is based in North Kent.0
